Jaylen Brown asked to be traded from the Celtics, per analyst Brian Scalabrine, in a new detail that has emerged. Brown was dealt from the Celtics to the Sixers this summer in a stunning trade that ended his 10-year tenure in Boston.
Brown was also included in rumors to Milwaukee in exchange for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Bucks ended up choosing the Heat’s trade package. Per Scalabrine, on the latest episode on his show, “The Starting Lineup,” he broke down how the Brown trade was communicated to him.
“My understanding is Jaylen Brown went to the organization and had a list of demands,” Scalabrine said. “It was like you either do this or you trade me. And he was rooting to get traded to Milwaukee, including calling some other teammates about, ‘Hey man, what do you think about Milwaukee? We should go there.’ My point of all this is if you’re actually doing that and you’re going and saying that (Jayson) Tatum is the one that’s lying, your whole basis of this thing is a lie.”
Scalabrine and his co-host, Frank Isola, were talking about the latest details involving Tatum and Brown. The entire saga started last week with a video of Tatum talking about his initial reaction to the deal. Brown then commented a cap emoji on social media, which is slang for untrue, leading to increased scrutiny about their relationship.
Scalabrine’s reveal of Brown wanting a trade out of Boston is certainly new. There haven’t been any reports on Brown looking to leave the Celtics. The reports were that Brown was included in the trade offer to the Bucks, and after that fell through, the Celtics were in the market for a new trade partner. That ended up being the Sixers, who sent Paul George and draft assets to Boston in exchange for Brown.
The Brown-and-Tatum saga has had multiple steps over the past few days. After Brown’s social media comments, Tatum was asked about his relationship with his former co-star. Tatum gave a lengthy answer following the Celtics’ win over the Knicks on Friday, saying he wanted to have a conversation with Brown. He also revealed that he reached out to Brown shortly after the trade but didn’t hear back.
It was Brown’s turn to answer Saturday following the Sixers’ win over the Bucks. Brown said there wasn’t any beef, but suggested there’s “lamb chop” instead. He also added Tatum has a great PR team and that “he should stay ready at all times.” It’s up to interpretation what exactly Brown meant, but it has led to increased media attention on the former Boston stars.
Regardless, the trade details from Scalabrine are new. The C’s and Sixers will meet Nov. 10 in Philly, which will be the first time Tatum and Brown play as opponents. That should have plenty of anticipation. Their relationship — or current lack thereof — has been a consistent talking point throughout the league for the several days.
“I think Jaylen Brown lives in his own reality,” Scalabrine said. “Because it wasn’t being documented that he demanded to be traded, I don’t think that anybody thinks that. Now he can say that it was Tatum’s fault. He can just make stuff up.”
