LG Electronics has launched an artificial intelligence refrigerator that lets users switch compartments between refrigeration and freezing and pull out food like a drawer. The appliance learns household routines to adjust cooling automatically and can set storage temperatures by voice command.
LG Electronics said on the 26th it had released the LG DIOS AI ObjetCollection STEM Ice & Water Refrigerator, which features a drawer-style design. STEM is the company's refrigerator brand that supplies water through a direct piping line and produces craft ice, or spherical ice, along with cubed and crushed ice.
The biggest change is the bottom freezer, now built as a pull-out drawer. Previously, users had to open side-swing doors and bend over to reach food. With the new model, pulling out the drawer reveals the contents from above at a glance. LG Electronics said it analyzed how far users bend their backs and legs to improve ease of use.
Within the drawer section, the middle compartment can be freely switched between refrigeration and freezing. Through the LG ThinQ app, users can choose from 14 storage modes tailored to foods including baby food, meal kits, wine, kimchi, meat and fish. The bottom compartment serves as a freezer.
The company also strengthened AI features. AI Fresh Care learns the hours when users open the door most often and supplies cold air in advance. During low-use hours, it adjusts compressor operation to cut power consumption. The refrigerator also accepts voice control. Say "I'm going to store beef," for example, and the AI recommends a temperature and location suited to the storage period, then applies that mode once the user selects it.
With kitchen layouts in mind, LG Electronics also narrowed the clearance needed between the refrigerator and surrounding cabinets. Installation requires only 9 millimeters of space between the top of the unit and the ceiling, and 4 millimeters on each side. Subscription customers receive inspection services every three months, including filter replacement and maintenance of the direct water line.
