Brazil’s 80-year-old president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a fourth term in office, defeating his challenger Flávio Bolsonaro with 51.8% of the run-off vote.
Bolsonaro, who won the first round of voting, refused to accept the outcome and said it had been the result of foul play. He demanded the election be annulled (NYTimes).
“Either the homeland remains free, or we die for Brazil,” Lula said after his victory “This country will not accept being anyone’s backyard” (AP).
Tech giant Meta’s oversight board said it had found “enforcement failures” in the moderation of content relating to the election, specifically that it had excessively used anti-fraud policies against Lula’s ad accounts (BBC).
