Wholesome deliciousness at a colourful, owner-operated “hidden gem”.
This might just be one of the most underrated restaurants in Sydney. While there aren’t influencers clamouring for content, there is a sunlit dining room hung with hand-painted tapestries, a produce-led menu with house-made sauces and ferments, and a hospitality veteran at its helm – the eponymous Michelle “Mishy” Powell.
She’s old school, regularly visiting Flemington Markets to create an affordable, seasonal menu. It’s honest, enriching fare, best enjoyed with a glass of mostly minimal-intervention wine or a botanical-forward cocktail, like “Mishy’s Mule” with double ginger and makrut lime.
Dishes flow smoothly: salad with grilled corn, smoky and sweet against wedges of just-ripened plums, the fruit bleeding purple into creamy macadamia green goddess sauce; an elevated spinach and ricotta ravioli made with green hand-cut pasta; and Corella pear tarte tatin, a golden, caramelised crown of poached, wafer-thin fruit and puff pastry. The secret’s out, but you still might want to keep it to yourself.
Good to know: Express lunch specials (served with a selection of fruity iced teas) start at just $18 for a roast chicken and avo sandwich, and it feels like good value.
