National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam yesterday accused the BNP of seeking to monopolise power and obstruct a peaceful transfer of power while in office.
Speaking at a press conference in Munshiganj, Nahid said the caretaker government system had a long history, with demands for it emerging during the mass movement of the 1990s and gaining support from political parties.
He said the BNP had held a one-sided election in 1996 but was eventually forced to step down amid a movement.
“In 2006 as well, BNP played dramas regarding the caretaker government. They politicised the judiciary, trying to install their own judge as the head of the caretaker government. In the same manner as the Awami League, the BNP has always tried to monopolise power. However, while the Awami League succeeded, the BNP did not,” he said.
Nahid alleged that the BNP was delaying the restoration of the caretaker government system and plotting to install its own people in key positions. He warned that such attempts would not succeed.
NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Sarjis Alam and other central and local leaders were also present at the programme.
