By Dan Brackett: Last week, I was in Long Beach, California, getting ready to attend the Jay-Z concert when I heard Shyne’s Billboard Hot 100 song, “Bad Boyz,” blasting over the loudspeakers at a public event.
That song always instills a sense of pride in me, knowing that another Belizean artist was able to achieve that level of global recognition for his art. It took me back to that time when Belizeans throughout Los Angeles shared that same pride in Shyne’s musical achievements.
I, like many Belizeans, am grateful for the exposure Shyne has brought, and continues to bring to the country of Belize. We need to give credit where credit is due, and Shyne deserves tremendous credit in this regard.
When Shyne decided to transition into politics, I was one of those Belizeans who believed he deserved a second chance as an alternative to the same old transactional politics in Belize. I had hoped that he would be coachable and willing to listen to those who helped usher him into the political system, largely because of his familial relationships.
Unfortunately, what has become increasingly evident to me is that his unwillingness to be coached, his arrogance, and his apparent lack of loyalty have contributed significantly to his political demise.
The fact that many of those who championed him when he first entered the political scene are no longer publicly speaking in his defense or showing their support should be a wake-up call—an opportunity to embrace humility, engage in honest self-reflection, and reconsider his approach to leadership.
But here we are. Once again, he is failing miserably at demonstrating the qualities of a servant-leader who puts the interests of all Belizeans above his own personal ambitions.
My sincere hope is that he matures as a leader, reinvents himself, and finds the humility to apologize to those he has wronged, including those non-politically affiliated family members who supported him without asking for anything in return, other than maintaining positive, constructive relationships with them.
I genuinely hope he eventually returns as a more humble, coachable, and politically savvy leader whom Belizeans, especially members of the very political party he continues to disparage, can trust.
As a rap artist and music ambassador, Shyne has done many positive things for the country of Belize. When he first transitioned into politics and accepted mentorship from those elder statesmen, he was also doing positive things for his party and constituency. In fact, he still occasionally does positive things for Belizeans. Unfortunately, those positive contributions are often overshadowed by the negativity he continues to spew publicly about his family and political party.
Shyne is charismatic, intelligent, articulate, and possesses strong, innate leadership traits. If he, as an aspiring political leader, could only harness those qualities for the greater good of his party, his constituency, and all Belizeans, he could still evolve into the transformational leader Belize so desperately needs.
Hopefully, Shyne will reconsider his apparent belief that the many Belizeans who disagree with his approach to leadership and relationship-building, are somehow taking pleasure in his political challenges or hoping to see him fail. That is simply not true.
He shouldn’t perceive constructive criticism as hostility, nor should Belizean’s difference of opinions be mistaken for a lack of support or goodwill. Many Belizeans genuinely want to see him succeed, but many also believe there is room for Shyne to grow, reflect on his political journey, and consider a more collaborative, transformational approach to leadership.
“The servant-leader is servant first, it begins with a natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first, as opposed to, wanting power, influence, fame, or wealth.” ~ Robert K. Greenleaf
