A special court in India today acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in an eight-year-old defamation case over reported remarks about Home Minister Amit Shah.
Rahul Gandhi appeared before the MP/MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, for the verdict in the case.
The case, filed in 2018 against Rahul, relates to allegedly objectionable remarks he made about Shah, who was then the BJP president, at a rally in Bengaluru ahead of the 2018 Karnataka assembly elections.
Vijay Mishra, a local BJP politician and former chairman of the District Cooperative Bank in Sultanpur, filed a defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi on 4 August 2018.
The Congress MP appeared before the court in February 2023 and secured bail after denying the allegations and calling the complaint politically motivated.
Rahul's counsel, Kashi Prasad Shukla, described the case as baseless and sought its dismissal.
