Members of the Tiruvarur Autorickshaw Employees Association on Tuesday staged a demonstration demanding free minimum fuel assistance from the State government.
The demonstrators, who assembled near Old Bus Stand, raised slogans claiming that their daily earnings had plummeted drastically following the implementation of Vettri Payanam, a no-fare bus scheme for women commuters, across the State from October 2.
Claiming that the scheme had caused immense financial stress on their families as a majority of them had taken loans or hired the vehicles on daily rent, they said they were struggling to make ends meet. Hence, the TVK government must provide five litres of fuel free of cost to each autorickshaw daily so that they could overcome the financial crisis they were facing to some extent.
They also demanded a sum of ₹5000 as Deepavali bonus to members of the Autorickshaw Employees Welfare Board and spiking of the online fine process.
