Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal have emerged as the leading contenders for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, with football fans awaiting the announcement of the winner at a ceremony scheduled for Monday night at the London Palladium in the United Kingdom.
The three forwards have made strong cases for the prestigious individual honour following outstanding performances for their respective clubs and countries during the 2025/26 season.
However, the race remains difficult to call, with bookmakers placing Bayern Munich and England striker Kane ahead of his rivals, while Mbappé has enjoyed a late surge in betting support and Barcelona’s Yamal remains in contention. Blueprint reports
The ceremony, which marks the 70th anniversary of the award established by France Football in 1956, will be held in London for the first time.
The award recognises individual performances, team achievements and fair play over the assessment period, which runs from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026.
Although several players feature on the 30-man shortlist, attention has increasingly centred on the three forwards whose statistics, achievements and influence have shaped the final debate.
Kane leads bookmakers’ predictions
Kane enters the ceremony as the bookmakers’ favourite after a prolific campaign with Bayern Munich and England.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern across all competitions, helping the German club win the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal.
His 36 Bundesliga goals also secured him the European Golden Shoe for the second time, further strengthening his claim to individual recognition.
Kane’s contributions extended to the Champions League, where he scored 14 goals as Bayern reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
He also scored six goals for England during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping his country reach the semi-finals before finishing third.
Across club and international football, Kane recorded 73 goals during the assessment period, according to figures reported by Sky Sports.
Victory would make him the first Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen claimed the prize in 2001.
It would also mark a significant personal achievement for the striker, who left Tottenham for Bayern in 2023 in search of major trophies.
Kane has acknowledged the significance of the possibility but has remained cautious about his chances.
He told Sky Sports News that winning the award would be special, adding that he would wait for the announcement rather than get carried away by the predictions.
Mbappé mounts late challenge
Mbappé has emerged as Kane’s closest challenger after a remarkable individual season for Real Madrid and France.
The French captain finished as La Liga’s leading scorer with 25 goals and was also the Champions League’s top scorer, with 15 goals, despite Real Madrid exiting the competition in the quarter-finals.
He scored 42 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish giants, according to Opta Analyst.
His performances at the 2026 World Cup further strengthened his individual credentials. Mbappé scored 10 goals to claim the tournament’s Golden Boot, becoming the first player to win the award twice.
He also took his career World Cup tally to 22 goals, establishing himself as the competition’s all-time leading scorer.
However, France’s failure to win the tournament and Real Madrid’s inability to secure major honours during the season have complicated his case.
Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup but failed to claim La Liga or the Champions League, while France finished third at the World Cup after losing to England in the third-place play-off.
Despite those setbacks, Mbappé’s scoring record has kept him firmly in contention.
His odds reportedly shortened considerably in the days leading up to the ceremony, moving him ahead of Yamal in several betting markets.
The late movement has intensified speculation about whether the French forward could overturn Kane’s advantage before the winner is announced.
Yamal hopes World Cup triumph will count
At 19, Yamal is seeking to become the youngest player to win the men’s Ballon d’Or.
The Barcelona and Spain winger has combined impressive performances at club level with the achievement of helping his country win the 2026 World Cup.
Yamal contributed 24 goals and 17 assists for Barcelona across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, giving him 41 goal involvements, according to Opta Analyst.
He also helped Barcelona win La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, although the club missed out on the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
His World Cup campaign was less prolific in terms of goals, as he scored once during Spain’s successful run.
Nevertheless, his contribution to Spain’s triumph remains an important part of his case, particularly because major international honours have often influenced Ballon d’Or voting in World Cup years.
Yamal also demonstrated his creative ability throughout the season, registering 17 assists for Barcelona and creating more chances than any other La Liga player across all competitions, according to Opta Analyst.
His age has added another dimension to the race, with a victory potentially making him the youngest winner in the award’s history.
However, the competition is formidable, and his individual scoring numbers fall below those of Kane and Mbappé.
What could decide the award?
The contest reflects three different arguments for the award.
Kane’s case rests on his exceptional scoring output, domestic double with Bayern and contribution to England’s World Cup campaign.
Mbappé boasts outstanding individual numbers, including the leading scoring positions in La Liga and the Champions League, as well as the World Cup Golden Boot.
Yamal, meanwhile, combines his creative output for Barcelona with the achievement of winning the World Cup with Spain and the Spanish league title.
The voting process is conducted by an international jury of journalists, who rank their selections from the official shortlist. Points are awarded according to each player’s position on the ballots, with the player receiving the highest total winning the award.
The result is therefore not determined by goals alone. Team achievements, individual influence and fair play also form part of the assessment.
Other shortlisted players, including Lionel Messi, Rodri and Ousmane Dembélé, have also featured in discussions about the award, although Kane, Mbappé and Yamal have dominated the latest predictions.
London prepares for historic ceremony
The 2026 ceremony marks seven decades since the first Ballon d’Or was awarded to England’s Stanley Matthews in 1956.
Its staging in London pays tribute to the award’s inaugural winner and brings football’s leading individual honour to the British capital for the first time.
The ceremony will also feature awards recognising achievements in women’s football, young talent, goalkeeping, coaching and club performance.
For Kane, the night offers the prospect of ending England’s 25-year wait for a men’s Ballon d’Or winner. For Mbappé, it presents an opportunity to translate his remarkable scoring record into the highest individual recognition in football. For Yamal, it could mark an extraordinary breakthrough at an age when most players are still establishing themselves at the highest level.
While the bookmakers currently favour Kane, Mbappé’s late momentum and Yamal’s international success have ensured that the contest remains a major talking point ahead of the announcement.
The final decision will be determined by the votes of the international jury, with the winner set to be confirmed at the London ceremony.
