When someone tossed a bright yellow warmup jacket into a bin at the Hillsboro Goodwill Outlet in January 2026, 19-year-old Portland-area thrifter Quinn Brown grabbed it for $3.07 and started checking photos and measurements. Sotheby’s later authenticated it as a Los Angeles Lakers jacket worn by Wilt Chamberlain during the 1972 NBA Finals, with details matched to images from the series against the New York Knicks. For Brown, a Lincoln High School graduate who had already moved nearly 10,000 items in four years of reselling, the find turned into a real payday when the jacket sold for $89,600 at Sotheby’s on 7/20/2026. “It’s just more of a motivator to continue,” Brown said.
A thrift-store micro-bet that paid off
The modern resale economy runs on small wagers: a few dollars here, a hunch there, and a lot of patience. In January 2026, 19-year-old Quinn Brown made one of those bets at the Hillsboro Goodwill Outlet outside Portland, paying $3.07 for a bright yellow warmup jacket. Months later, it became the kind of outcome that keeps every part-time reseller glued to their search alerts.
The jacket’s provenance: Lakers history in a bin
When the jacket surfaced on the high end of the market, it came with a very specific claim: Sotheby’s authenticated it as a Los Angeles Lakers warmup worn by Wilt Chamberlain during the 1972 NBA Finals, a series the Lakers won over the New York Knicks, with Chamberlain named Finals MVP. Sotheby’s also tied the piece to the 1972-73 regular season, Chamberlain’s final NBA season.
That’s the part casual sellers often miss: in collectibles, value is less about fabric and more about verified linkage. Sotheby’s described it as an “extraordinary piece of memorabilia,” language that signals confidence to buyers who treat sports artifacts like alternative assets.
Pattern matching, measurements, and a reseller’s instincts
Brown’s edge started at the bin. He saw the jacket after someone tossed it in, and he didn’t treat it like a normal find. He compared it to an online photo of Chamberlain wearing a similar jacket and checked that the measurements closely matched Chamberlain’s known size.
Sotheby’s authenticators later matched the jacket’s stitching to photos of Chamberlain wearing it in that 1972 matchup, an old-school technique that feels newly relevant now that marketplaces are flooded with lookalikes. How many potential “assets” get left behind because nobody takes that second step?
From 10,000 prior sales to an $89,600 result
Brown wasn’t new to this. A Lincoln High School graduate, he had already sold nearly 10,000 items over the prior 4 years, experience that likely helped him keep moving from curiosity to verification.
The payoff arrived on July 20, 2026, when the jacket sold in Sotheby’s Summer Sports Classic for $89,600. Pre-sale chatter had floated numbers as high as $150,000 to $250,000, and one report cited $335,000, but the final price still landed as a stunning conversion from a $3.07 receipt. Brown called the win “finding something like this was really possible,” and said, “It’s just more of a motivator to continue,” as he plans to invest the proceeds and keep reselling.
