Cleveland-based University Hospitals has rescheduled some appointments and elective procedures as it continues recovering from an Oct. 22 cybersecurity incident that has disrupted its MyChart patient portal and other systems.
In an Oct. 26 statement shared with Becker’s, the 18-hospital system said it made significant progress restoring its systems over the weekend but continues to experience operational challenges expected to persist throughout the week.
“Patients still cannot access MyChart,” the statement said. “There are challenges connecting to the UH network at some locations. We are encountering problems with insurance pre-authorizations, among other issues.”
The disruptions began Oct. 22 when University Hospitals detected unusual activity on its servers and disconnected its systems from the internet as a precaution.
At the time, a spokesperson told Becker’s that certain digital services were offline while the system investigated, but there was no impact on patient care delivery. The system warned that disruptions could continue for several days.
The health system’s latest statement confirms that some appointments and elective procedures have since been rescheduled.
“We continue to investigate the incident with outside experts and are in communication with law enforcement,” University Hospitals said.
The health system has not disclosed the cause or full scope of the cybersecurity incident, whether patient information was compromised or when all affected systems will be restored.
“Please know we have teams of people working around the clock to address these issues,” University Hospitals said. “We appreciate your patience and understanding.”
