If ESPN won’t offer Troy Aikman a new contract to keep working with Joe Buck on Monday Night Football, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys might.
Buck and Aikman were supposed to be entering the final year of their contracts with ESPN together as the 2026 NFL season began. But to Aikman’s surprise, Buck quietly signed a long-term contract extension with ESPN months ago.
As Aikman has spent recent weeks coming to terms with the possibility that ESPN and Buck might be ready to move on without him, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback expressed interest in returning to the franchise he won three Super Bowls with. And Tuesday morning, Jerry Jones confirmed the interest is mutual during his weekly appearance with Dallas sports radio hosts Shan Shariff and RJ Choppy on 105.3 The Fan.
Shariff asked Jones a direct question: whether he would ever bring Aikman in for a “major significant role with the Cowboys” if he were interested.
“Yes, I could and would,” Jones confirmed. “It’s that simple, because I do think that much of him, with his basic command and understanding and knowledge of NFL football. He certainly is qualified to do any of the things that have been mentioned, and I think he’s outstanding at what he focuses on right now, and that’s giving the story and narration of football games.
“Let me make it real clear, Troy Aikman is just getting started in his life. I don’t know of anyone in any part of football that’s had more success off the field than Troy. He is a successful guy. Because he is one of the hardest-working, most focused people that I’ve ever been around. When you’re around each other, a part of that makeup can make it where you have your ups and downs. I think the world of him. I’ve seen his image and had it in my eyes since I walked in the NFL. He’s outstanding. The answer is not necessarily that we’re going to do something more direct with the team at this time, but don’t rule it out. It’s very possible.”
Aikman has long been interested in running an NFL franchise, having entertained the idea publicly as far back as 2019. Last year, Aikman even said, “There will be a part of me that always wonders as to whether or not I could have done the job.” He sort of scratched that itch during the offseason, when Aikman joined the Miami Dolphins as a consultant amid their search for a new head coach and general manager.
With his future as a broadcaster suddenly and unexpectedly uncertain, the timing might be right for Aikman to seek a more permanent front-office role. The question is whether Jerry Jones would actually be interested. If Aikman wants a high-profile gig, the Cowboys are the place to go. But if Aikman wants control, then Dallas doesn’t seem like a fit.
Jones might also have two former quarterbacks to choose from after Tony Romo recently parted ways with CBS following his offseason OWI arrest in Wisconsin. While Aikman’s relationship with Jones has often been considered lukewarm, the Cowboys owner has always been one of Romo’s biggest fans.
