Every island has its own economy. Grand Bahama’s recovery must give Grand Bahamians a fair opportunity to work, build, own and prosper.
I am calling on the relevant authorities to urgently review pricing and market conditions in the concrete and concrete block manufacturing sector, including matters involving Del Zotto Products of The Bahamas, formerly Gold Rock Corporation.
I am asking for an impartial examination of pricing, raw material access, supply arrangements and concessions to determine whether competition is fair. These concerns require verified evidence and a timely response.
Grand Bahama remembers the disruption associated with Gold Rock’s previous withdrawal. That history demonstrates why reliable supply and competing manufacturers matter. If local businesses disappear, our construction industry becomes more vulnerable to price increases and supply interruptions.
Bahamian manufacturers face real costs: Materials, freight, applicable government fees, electricity, equipment and wages. Lower prices benefit customers, but authorities should examine whether current conditions support sustainable competition or risk leaving the market with fewer suppliers.
Where is the business case for Bahamians to invest their savings and employ people if credible concerns about fair competition go unanswered?
Local ownership creates opportunities for earnings to circulate through Bahamian households, suppliers and further investment. Foreign investment should also create lasting opportunities for Bahamians through fair competition and meaningful local participation.
Grand Bahamians deserve the opportunity to build substantial businesses, create wealth and leave something for our children.
When qualified local companies meet the required standards, capacity and fair commercial terms, they should receive meaningful consideration for projects here. We must stop handing over the keys without securing a place for our own people.
Several letters have been submitted to the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA). I am calling on the relevant authorities to provide clear answers, establish a reasonable timetable and act on any substantiated breaches, while respecting the rights of everyone involved.
Although I am speaking publicly, these concerns extend across our industry. Speaking out carries risk, but if using my voice helps protect businesses and livelihoods that Bahamians have worked hard to build, I am prepared to stand.
We say The Bahamas should be for Bahamians. Let that commitment be reflected in fair access, equal treatment and real opportunities.
