In 1986, Fiji was a very different place. Businesses were built on handshakes, mobile phones were still years away, and entrepreneurs relied on determination, relationships, and access to finance to turn ideas into reality.
Forty years later, while the tools of business have changed dramatically, one thing remains the same: ambitious people still need the confidence and support to pursue growth. Over the past four decades, Merchant Finance has been part of that journey. Its story is intertwined with the stories of thousands of Fijians who chose to invest, expand, and build. Transport operators purchasing their first commercial vehicle. Farmers acquiring equipment to improve productivity. Hoteliers upgrading facilities. Retailers opening new stores. Families purchasing land and building homes.
Across every sector of the economy, there are businesses whose growth has been supported by access to finance at a critical moment. The journey mirrors Fiji’s own economic evolution. Through periods of expansion, challenge, recovery, and transformation, industries have adapted and new generations of entrepreneurs have emerged with fresh ideas and greater ambition.
As customer needs evolved, so too did the organisation. What began as a focused finance company expanded its offerings over time, supporting businesses and individuals through different stages of growth. Yet despite four decades of change, one thing has remained constant: people.
For many long-serving employees, the most rewarding part of the business is seeing what happens after the paperwork is complete. It is watching a customer return years later to finance a second truck, a larger piece of equipment, or the next phase of a growing enterprise. It is seeing small family businesses become established brands and relationships develop across generations. Those relationships have been built on a simple foundation: trust.
Trust earned through consistency, responsible lending, and a commitment to understanding customers and the ambitions that drive them. Trust that has carried businesses through changing economic conditions and helped transform opportunities into progress.
Today, as Fiji continues to evolve, the next generation of business owners faces a world shaped by technology, innovation, and changing market demands. While the environment may be different, the need for access to finance remains as important as ever.
Forty years is a significant milestone, but it is ultimately measured not in years, but in stories. Stories of enterprise, resilience, and growth. Stories that together reflect the progress of a nation and the people who continue to shape its future.
As Merchant Finance marks its 40th anniversary, it does so with appreciation for the journey so far and optimism for the chapters still to come.
