I explored 5 code editors beyond VS Code, and one was clearly ahead

Beginning his professional journey in the tech industry in 2018, Yash spent over three years as a Software Engineer. After that, he shifted his focus to empowering readers through informative and engaging content on his tech blog – DiGiTAL BiRYANi. He has also published tech articles for MakeTechEasier. He loves to explore new tech gadgets and platforms.  When he is not writing, you’ll find him exploring food. He is known as Digital Chef Yash among his readers because of his love for Technology and Food.

VS Code has become my go-to recommendation for coding, but I started wondering what I might be missing by sticking with the same editor. There are plenty of alternatives out there, each with its own approach to writing and managing code. So, I decided to explore five options that caught my attention, from traditional text editors to AI-powered coding environments. I wanted to see what made each one worth considering, where they fell short, and whether any could offer a better everyday experience. One of them surprised me more than I expected.

Kate

A simple text editor that does more than I expected

Kate felt like a practical option when I wanted an editor that stayed out of my way. It comes with a clean interface, syntax highlighting for multiple programming languages, and useful features that make working with code easier. I particularly liked its split-view editing, which let me work with two files side by side without constantly switching between tabs.

Kate also includes a built-in terminal, making it convenient to run commands without leaving the editor. Its session support helps me pick up where I left off, while the search and replace tools make navigating larger files less tedious. However, Kate feels more like a traditional text editor than a modern development environment. It's a solid choice for everyday editing, but I wanted something more ambitious.

Devin Desktop

A different approach to getting coding work done

Devin Desktop caught my attention because it takes a different approach to working with code. Rather than focusing only on editing files, it brings Devin's AI software engineering capabilities into a desktop environment. I could use it to delegate coding tasks, work through project requirements, and let an AI agent handle parts of the implementation.

What interested me most was the idea of moving beyond asking for code suggestions and giving an agent a more complete task to work on. This approach could be useful when I need to explore an unfamiliar codebase or tackle repetitive development work. However, I still needed to review the output carefully and make sure the changes matched my requirements.

Devin Desktop felt more like a workspace for AI-assisted development than a conventional code editor. That distinction made it interesting, although it wasn't quite the traditional editing experience I was looking for.

Cursor

AI features that fit naturally into my coding workflow

The familiar interface made it easy for me to get started without spending much time learning a new layout. What stood out was how easily I could ask questions about my code, generate changes, and work with multiple files using natural-language instructions.

I found its codebase awareness particularly useful. Instead of explaining every file and function manually, I could ask it to help me understand how different parts of a project worked together. Its inline editing also made it convenient to refine existing code without interrupting my workflow.

However, AI is central to the experience, and getting the most out of it means relying on AI throughout development. I liked the convenience, but I wanted to see whether another editor could offer a better overall balance of performance, simplicity, and everyday usability.

Nevoim

A keyboard-driven editor that rewards patience

I had to adjust my usual editing habits to get comfortable with Neovim. It uses a keyboard-focused, modal editing system, so I could navigate files, select text, and make changes without constantly reaching for the mouse. Once I started getting used to its commands, even routine editing tasks felt more efficient.

What impressed me was how much control it offered. I could customize the editor with Lua, add plugins for my preferred workflow, and use its built-in language server support for features such as code navigation and diagnostics. Its terminal integration was another useful addition, keeping common development tasks close at hand.

The downside was the learning curve. Neovim requires more setup and patience than most graphical editors. I appreciated its flexibility, but I wanted an editor that felt powerful without demanding so much configuration.

Zed

The editor that got the balance right

What stood out to me about Zed was its focus on performance. Built with Rust, it is designed to keep editing responsive without the overhead of an Electron-based editor. Moving between files, navigating projects, and working with multiple panes felt smooth. I also liked how the clean interface kept the focus on my code instead of surrounding it with too many panels and menus.

Zed offers several useful features without requiring me to build my entire workflow around extensions. Its built-in Git integration lets me review changes, inspect diffs, and manage my work directly in the editor. Language server support adds familiar development features such as code completion, diagnostics, and navigation, while the integrated terminal lets me run commands without switching applications.

I was also interested in its approach to AI and collaboration. Zed supports AI-assisted coding, including inline edits and chat, with options to connect different model providers. Its real-time collaboration features let developers work together in a shared editing environment.

The editor that earned a place in my workflow

Exploring these five editors reminded me that the most popular tool isn't always the right fit for everyone. Each one has something different to offer, but Zed stood out as the editor I wanted to spend more time with. It balances a focused interface with useful features without making the experience feel complicated. VS Code remains a solid choice, but if you're curious about trying something new, Zed deserves a spot on your shortlist.
