Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth on Monday said that officials who failed to execute their duties properly would be pulled up.
He made this remark after visiting a cover and plinth (CAP) paddy storage point maintained by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation at Patteswaram near Kumbakonam on Monday where he found several paddy bags drenched in rain.
The Minister, who made a surprise visit to the storage point, went round the facility and saw that the tarpaulins covering the paddy bags were damaged.
When he called the officials concerned, he was informed that steps had been taken to safeguard the grains from rain. Annoyed by the instant reply, Mr. Vinoth told them that he was at the Patteswaram CAP storage where several paddy bags were exposed to the elements.
Later, the Minister told presspersons that apathetic officials would be pulled up and that officials were being transferred only to improve the performance of the government machinery.
The Agriculture Department officials had been instructed to be on the field to ensure that complaints of waterlogging of agriculture fields were attended on priority and the standing crop was saved.
Meanwhile, a group of farmers in Kudavasal area in Tiruvarur district said that samba crop raised by them on hundreds of acres of land in their region remained under water for the past two days. Silting of drainage channels was the root cause of the problem, they said.
