Kyiv Plans $22 Million in New Water Crossings Over Dnipro River

Kyiv plans to spend Hr.1 billion ($22 million) on combined water crossings over the Dnipro River and access roads, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Oct. 27, as Russia intensifies attacks on the capital’s critical infrastructure.

The project was discussed at a meeting of the Kyiv Defense Council, Klitschko said in a statement on Telegram.

“The initiative was proposed by the state, and the government adopted a corresponding resolution,” Klitschko said, adding that the military command would determine the crossing locations, subject to approval by the Kyiv City Military Administration.

The city will allocate Hr.1 billion for the project following a recommendation from the government, he said.

The defense council also discussed measures to protect bridges in the capital amid intensified Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.

City specialists are developing additional technical solutions to protect the structural integrity of bridges spanning the Dnipro River, Klitschko said. Military officials also presented proposals on the issue.

The announcement follows a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv overnight on Oct. 27 that damaged the Southern Bridge and metro infrastructure located on it.

Traffic across the bridge was temporarily suspended in both directions, while metro operations were disrupted.

There is currently no information on when the bridge will reopen to traffic or when metro service on this section of the line will resume.

‘Delays Directly Assist Russia’: Zelensky Slams Slow Delivery of Interceptors

Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles and over 280 drones overnight, striking Kyiv and infrastructure across multiple Ukrainian regions.

The South Bridge carries both road traffic and a section of the Green Line, making it a critical connection across the Dnipro.

Kyiv’s bridges have come under Russian attacks since Oct. 1, followed by two days of consecutive strikes on the North Bridge in the next two days, with metro infrastructure on the South Bridge also targeted on Oct. 22.

The attacks threaten to cut off both sides of the capital, with experts previously telling Kyiv Post that the bridges are difficult to destroy but possible to disable.

Kyiv has bolstered air defenses around the bridges after the attacks, including automated machine-gun turrets, though the lack of US Patriot interceptors has left the city vulnerable to Russian ballistic missile attacks, with Kyiv having little to no alternative means of defense.
