President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Enactment and Enforcement Amendment Bill 2026 to the Senate for consideration.
The proposed legislation seeks to amend the existing law to facilitate the transfer of convicted offenders between Nigeria and other countries under international agreements.
In a letter read during plenary, Tinubu asked the Senate to give the bill expeditious consideration.
The amendment also seeks to empower the President to extend the law’s application to countries with which Nigeria has entered into relevant agreements through an order published in the Federal Gazette.
The proposed provision would cover countries outside the Commonwealth, broadening the scope of the existing legislation.
Following the letter’s presentation, the Senate referred the bill to its Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.
