The Department of Meteorology has warned that heavy showers and strong winds will continue across several parts of Sri Lanka over the next 36 hours as cyclonic storm Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal.
According to the forecast issued at 4 p.m. on October 26, the deep depression over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm Arnab.
The storm was located approximately 1,100 km northeast of Kankasanthurai at 8:30 a.m. on October 26.
It is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 5:30 p.m. on October 26 and develop further into a very severe cyclonic storm on October 27, before making landfall along India’s Andhra Pradesh coast around 11:30 a.m. on October 28.
The department said the system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka. However, rainfall is expected to continue in southwestern parts of the island over the coming days due to wind patterns associated with the storm.
Showers or thundershowers are forecast in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, Central and North-central provinces, as well as the Trincomalee District.
Rainfall exceeding 75 mm is expected in some areas, while showers or thundershowers are forecast elsewhere after 1 p.m.
Strong winds reaching 40–50 km/h are expected along the western slopes of the central hills, in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces, and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
The public has been advised to take precautions against lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers. (Newswire)
