The Kansas City Chiefs are facing an unexpected issue on special teams following a 20–3 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Veteran kicker Harrison Butker struggled throughout the game, missing two key field goal attempts.
Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid had to directly address this issue. Chiefs heavily expect from Harrison Butker so Andy Reid reflected on what they are going to do to fix this problem.
Andy Reid feels urgency to fix Harrison Butker
Harrison Butker had a rough game during the Kansas City Chiefs’ devastating loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Late in the second quarter, he tried a long 58-yard field goal, but the ball fell short of the goalposts. Later in the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs down 13–3, Butker had another chance from 45 yards out to lower the deficit. However, his kick went wide right and missed completely.
Head coach Andy Reid talked about the kicking problems after the game. “Listen, he’s been one of the most consistent kickers in football. He’s off a bit. So, we’ve got to fix that,” Reid said in postgame press conference. Reid did not blame the loss entirely on Butker, but his message showed clear urgency. The Chiefs gave Butker a huge contract extension worth $25.6 million.
After those two misses against Seattle, his field goal accuracy dropped down to 68.8 percent. That ranks near the bottom for starting kickers in the NFL. He has struggled the most on long kicks over 50 yards, missing four of his six long attempts this year. With several missed kicks over the last few weeks, the Chiefs really need Butker to find his usual form again.
Butker acknowledged what went wrong
Harrison Butker talked about his recent kicking problems after the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Seattle Seahawks. “Warm-up wasn’t great. It’s just something that you have to roll with and try to fix it in the game and do the best that you can,” Butker said after the game.
On his missed 58-yard attempt, he tried to keep his normal smooth swing, but the ball still fell short of the goalposts. “I think I’m at my best when I’m smooth and not overswinging. Going into that game, our range was the 37-yard line, so that was a 55-yard field goal. And for the 58, I didn’t want to change anything. I just wanted to keep it smooth, and unfortunately it was a little short.” He reflected on the missed opportunity.
Instead of worrying about his past misses, Butker said he focuses on taking things one kick at a time. He added that he is thankful for every chance he gets and just tries to do his best on every attempt.
