King Mohammed VI has sent a message of condolences to Jordan’s King Abdullah II following a terrorist attack on a church in the southern governorate of Karak that killed nine people and injured dozens.
In his message, the Moroccan monarch expressed profound sorrow and indignation over the abhorrent terrorist attack against the church, and extended condolences to the victims’ families and the Jordanian people while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The King reaffirmed Morocco’s solidarity with Jordan and utter rejection of any form of terrorism that threatens the security and lives of innocent citizens. He expressed his support for the Hashemite kingdom following the deadly assault.
Praying to the Almighty to spare the Kingdom of Jordan from any misfortune, King Mohammed VI extended to the Hashemite Sovereign his feelings of sympathy and compassion, as well as his high regard and esteem.
The attack occurred Friday, October 23, at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George in the village of Hmoud, where gunmen opened fire on people attending a funeral.
Jordanian authorities reported nine deaths and at least 34 injuries, according to Reuters.
On Monday, October 26, Jordanian security forces arrested three suspects following an armed confrontation at an abandoned house in Karak governorate.
Authorities said the suspects, two brothers and their brother-in-law, refused to surrender and opened fire on security personnel, who returned fire and wounded all three before arresting them.
Weapons and ammunition were recovered during the operation, while no security officers were injured.
Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said preliminary investigations had found no evidence linking the suspects to other militant cells. The investigation remains ongoing, and no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.
King Abdullah II ordered a firm response, while Jordan declared three days of mourning for the victims.
