You might have noticed that the temperature has dropped, the clocks have gone back, and summer is now but a distant memory. In the words of Game Of Thrones, winter is coming.
There are some advantages to it being cold and rainy outside, however. It’s the perfect excuse to cosy up indoors with some top-notch Netflix viewing.
As ever, there’s no shortage of brilliant movies and new series making their way on to the streaming platform in recent weeks, and with Halloween coming up now’s the chance to add a bit of suspense to the viewing mix.
But if out and out horror’s not quite your thing, how about a good tense thriller instead? Here’s four movies and series that you should add to your watchlist this week…
Unabomber (2026)
Having shot to fame as a child actor in Room, Jacob Tremblay takes on a far darker role in this recently released Netflix thriller which tells the true story of domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski.
Tremblay portrays Kaczynski from the age of 16, when he entered Harvard University, as the film explores his troubled early adulthood and eventual radicalisation leading to the 17-year bombing campaign which left three people dead.
With a cast which also includes the likes of Russell Crowe and Shailene Woodley, this is a compelling and unsettling watch, which has won comparisons to Netflix’s equally chilling Adolescence.
Animals (2026)
Ben Affleck is having a pretty successful year on Netflix having scored a huge hit with The Rip earlier this year, he’s now back with this action thriller which owes more than a debt to Mel Gibson’s 90s blockbuster Ransom.
Affleck both directs and takes the lead here as Mark Kimball, an LA mayoral candidate whose life is upended when his son is kidnapped and held to ransom.
Cue dark secrets and deception galore coming out of the woodwork when he and his wife Abigail (Kerry Washington) resort to extreme measures to get their boy back.
The Trap (2026)
If you’re more in the mood for a suspenseful TV series than a movie, new German thriller The Trap could be just what you’re looking for.
Based on the 2015 book of the same name by author Melanie Rabbe, Friederike Becht stars as Lisa Konrad, a writer who hasn’t left her house for a decade following the murder of her sister.
However when she sees a journalist on TV who she believes is her sister’s killer, she’s determined to prove it — and comes up with a risky plan to get justice for her death.
The Whisper Man (2026)
Finally, this one’s been out a couple of months already but if you’ve not yet seen The Whisper Man and you’re in the mood for a few pre-Halloween scares now’s your chance to play catch-up.
Based on the novel by Alex North, the film centres on a recently widowed novelist (Adam Scott) who moves with his young son to the small town of Garretton to begin a new life.
Except their fresh start is far from peaceful, as the town has been hit by child abductions linked to the notorious titular serial killer. And when his own son goes missing he’s forced to team up with his estranged dad (Robert de Niro) in a bid to get him back.
