FIVE suspects have appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court linked to a case of double murder in Military Road, Steenberg, last week.
According to the South African Police Service Western Cape (SAPA), the five men were initially arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms, following a high-speed chase that resulted in the recovery of two automatic rifles and a pistol on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that after their appearance, they were remanded in custody for a formal bail application.
Meanwhile, Anti-Gang Unit detectives worked around the clock and obtained conclusive evidence that links the suspects to the double murder. The five suspects will appear on Thursday 29 October 2026.
The suspects, aged 27, 28, 31, 32 and 40, were taken into custody by Operation Prosper members following the shooting in Military Road at about 12.30pm.
Officers were responding to reports of a double murder, where two men, aged 23 and 37, were shot dead.
Gwala said at the time: “Western Cape SAPS management welcomes the swift arrest of five gang-affiliated male suspects, following a shooting in Military Road, Steenberg.
Police were told the suspects fled the scene in a red VW Polo, prompting a high-speed chase.
The suspects allegedly abandoned their vehicle in Kirstenhof before hijacking a Toyota RunX.
During a search of the hijacked vehicle, officers recovered two assault rifles.
The Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) has praised police and other law enforcement agencies for their swift response.
The CPF said in a statement: “We acknowledge the shooting incident that occurred earlier today on Military Road.
“We commend SAPS and all agencies involved for their swift response, which resulted in the apprehension of suspects and the recovery of firearms.”
