Apple has acknowledged reports of cracked inner displays on its new foldable iPhone Duo, just days after the device went on sale. The company says the issue affects a small number of units and advises customers experiencing display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Over the weekend, several iPhone Duo owners reported on Reddit and other forums that their inner displays had cracked down the center, along the hinge. The damage appears in a similar location across multiple reports, with some affected screens also showing a horizontal band of bright or stuck pixels. In a few cases, users said the problem appeared within hours of receiving their phones, and some reported damage during the initial setup process. The number of affected devices remains unclear, and some reports circulating online have turned out to be fake.
In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said it was aware of the problem but did not provide a technical explanation for the failures:
The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor.
We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Owners do not need an AppleCare+ subscription to qualify for a replacement for this particular issue. Those who bought their phones through mobile carriers should contact AppleCare directly rather than their carrier. Some affected owners have reportedly received replacement devices through Apple Stores, although availability may vary.
The cause of the failures has not been confirmed. A teardown by repair specialists at iFixit identified several potential trouble spots around the hinge, including a central support bar that may not retract properly when the phone closes. If that happens, it could put excessive pressure on the inner display. Other hinge components might also contribute to the damage, but iFixit has not identified a definitive cause.
Apple has not disclosed how many phones are involved or whether a hardware revision is planned. Owners who notice cracks or other display problems should contact AppleCare for assistance.
