Kathmandu, October 26
Actor Rajesh Hamal has criticised Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle over his recent remarks on Nepali nationalism in India, saying the minister had exceeded the limits of his official position.
Hamal said Wagle’s comments risked undermining the principles underpinning Nepal’s longstanding foreign policy. He also argued that relations between Nepal and India should not become a platform for personal flattery or public ridicule.
Wagle made the remarks at an event organised by Indian television channel NDTV, saying the era of associating Nepali nationalism with anti-India sentiment had ended. His statement has drawn criticism in Nepal, with former foreign minister Pradeep Gyawali also questioning the remarks.
Commenting on the controversy, Hamal said Nepal’s foreign policy should remain grounded in national sovereignty, dignity and long-term principles rather than the personal views or immediate political interests of individual officeholders.
“Nepal’s foreign policy has always been based on national sovereignty, dignity and long-term principles. It should not be conducted according to an individual’s discretion or immediate political interests,” Hamal wrote on social media.
Acknowledging the historical, cultural and geographical importance of Nepal-India relations, Hamal said strengthening ties with the neighbouring country was both natural and necessary. However, he stressed that national dignity and diplomatic propriety must receive equal consideration.
“Nepal-India relations are deeply rooted in geography, history, culture and people-to-people ties. Strengthening this relationship further is not only natural but necessary,” he said.
Hamal said genuine efforts to build stronger relations with neighbouring countries should be welcomed, but Nepali representatives must communicate the country’s position with dignity, balance and maturity.
“Given the historical importance and strategic sensitivity of Nepal-India relations, they cannot be reduced to displays of personal flattery or statements that invite public ridicule,” he said.
Hamal also pointed to unresolved issues between the two countries, including longstanding border disputes and economic dependence. He said the government should communicate Nepal’s position on such matters clearly and consistently.
Rather than relying on rhetoric, he said, the country should prioritise established diplomatic channels, evidence and friendly dialogue.
Hamal concluded that maintaining friendly relations with neighbouring countries and firmly defending national sovereignty were complementary responsibilities, not competing objectives.
“Friendship with neighbouring countries and an unwavering commitment to one’s own sovereignty are not competing objectives. They are complementary responsibilities,” he said.
