Walter Koenig, whose portrayal of the young Russian navigator Pavel Chekov helped make Star Trek a television phenomenon, has died aged 90, with his representatives confirming that he passed away from natural causes.
The veteran actor died on Sunday, October 25, at his home in North Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter and niece. His representative, Zachery McGinnis, announced the news the following day, describing a performer whose influence extended far beyond his most famous role.

"Today we mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world," the statement said.
Koenig had celebrated his 90th birthday in September and remained professionally active into his final years, continuing a career that began long before science fiction transformed him into an international celebrity.
What was Walter Koenig's cause of death?
McGinnis attributed Koenig's death to old age, with no specific illness or additional medical complications disclosed.
The actor spent his final moments at home with family members, bringing an end to a career that stretched across television, cinema, writing and theater.
His representatives also highlighted one of his final acting achievements, a performance in the short film Mr. Fleischmann that earned him the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards.
Koenig's continued involvement in the entertainment industry reflected a lifelong commitment to performing, even decades after achieving worldwide recognition.
Koenig's Star Trek role created an enduring legacy
Born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, Koenig joined Star Trek: The Original Series during its second season in 1967.
His character, Ensign Pavel Chekov, brought youthful energy and humor to the USS Enterprise, becoming an important addition to the show's celebrated ensemble cast.
Chekov's presence also reflected the series' optimistic vision of international cooperation during the Cold War, placing a Russian officer alongside American and other crew members.
Koenig appeared in 36 episodes of the original series before returning for seven feature films, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
His association with the franchise continued into 2023, when he voiced President Anton Chekov in Star Trek: Picard.
George Takei remembers longtime Star Trek colleague
Koenig enjoyed success beyond Star Trek, notably portraying Alfred Bester in Babylon 5, while also working as a screenwriter and author.
His connection with fans remained particularly strong, with convention appearances becoming a familiar part of his later career.
Former co-star George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu, paid tribute to Koenig as a friend and creative collaborator.
"Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend," Takei wrote.
Koenig's death leaves William Shatner and Takei as the remaining surviving principal cast members of the original Star Trek series.
His career will be remembered not only through Chekov's adventures aboard the Enterprise, but through the warmth and humor he brought to a franchise that continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
