The ZODL founder says the proposed Crosslink staking mechanism is 'not good for Zcash' and has paused its rollout.
Josh Swihart, the founder of ZODL and a prominent contributor to the Zcash ecosystem, has paused development of the Crosslink staking upgrade for ZEC. Swihart publicly stated that the proposed mechanism is 'not good for Zcash,' according to reporting from U.Today and AMBCrypto.
Crosslink has been positioned as a potential path for Zcash to introduce staking functionality. Staking allows token holders to lock up assets to help secure a network, typically in exchange for rewards. Many proof-of-stake blockchains use staking as a core security and incentive mechanism.
Zcash, however, was built on a proof-of-work model and is best known for its privacy-focused transaction technology. Any shift toward staking would represent a significant structural change for the network. Developers and community members have debated how such a change might affect Zcash's privacy guarantees, decentralization, and long-term security model.
Swihart's decision to halt the upgrade signals internal disagreement over the direction of Zcash's development roadmap. As a key developer, his pushback carries weight within the community that shapes technical proposals for the network. His stated concern suggests he views Crosslink's current design as carrying risks that outweigh its potential benefits.
Details on the specific technical objections behind Swihart's decision have not been fully outlined in available reporting. It remains unclear whether the pause is temporary, pending redesign, or a more permanent rejection of the Crosslink approach. The broader Zcash developer community has not yet issued a unified public response.
The episode highlights a recurring tension in blockchain governance. Privacy-focused networks like Zcash often face pressure to add features that improve usability or yield generation, such as staking. At the same time, core developers must weigh whether such additions compromise the properties that define the protocol. Zcash's identity has long centered on shielded transactions and optional privacy, features that distinguish it from more transparent blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Market Impact
News of a halted staking upgrade can inject uncertainty into a project's near-term development narrative, particularly when a key developer publicly criticizes the proposal. For ZEC holders, the pause may delay any yield-generating mechanisms tied to staking that had been anticipated as part of Zcash's technical evolution.
Market reaction to governance disputes within privacy coin projects tends to hinge on how quickly a resolution or alternative plan emerges. Prolonged uncertainty over core protocol direction can weigh on investor confidence, while a swift, transparent response from the development team may limit any lasting impact on sentiment toward Zcash.
The dispute over Crosslink underscores the ongoing debate within the Zcash community about how far the network should evolve beyond its privacy-focused, proof-of-work roots. Further updates from Zcash developers are expected to clarify the staking upgrade's future.
Frequently Asked Questions
