The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South, Maria Ude Nwachi, has pledged to use the Senate to facilitate wealth creation, expand business opportunities and empower constituents, accusing politicians of failing to help others achieve economic prosperity.
Nwachi, who is seeking election in 2027, said she would prioritise creating an enabling environment for people to grow their businesses, increase their wealth and become more influential, rather than allowing political representation to benefit only a few individuals.
“One of the things I detest about most politicians is that they don’t make other people grow. They don’t give an enabling environment for people to grow, really grow,” she said during an interview.
She argued that economic empowerment should not be restricted to assisting the poor, but should also include helping established businesspeople expand their investments through access to opportunities and strategic connections.
“Even our big men need help. Let’s assume one of our big men has one billion naira. Through somebody in Abuja, through a representative in Abuja, they can go from one billion to five billion,” she said.
The candidate maintained that helping more people become wealthy would benefit society, insisting that elected representatives should use their positions to create opportunities that enable constituents to become economically independent.
Nwachi, who disclosed that she had been reconnecting with communities after seven years away, said she had begun local visits ahead of the 2027 election to renew her relationship with constituents.
She announced plans to inaugurate her campaign council in Afikpo ahead of her official campaign flag-off scheduled for October 31, 2026 acknowledging that financing a senatorial campaign remained a major challenge.
“Luckily for me, I have some good people that believe a lot in me who have been bringing money, not just small money, many times ten million, twenty million, thirty million, fifty million,” she said, expressing appreciation for the financial support.
The PDP candidate cited her political experience, including her claim that she won an election in 2015 without being given a party ticket, as part of her record in public service.
She also recalled using her personal resources to undertake community projects, including road grading, while serving in the Ebonyi state House of Assembly.
She further called for fairness in political representation in Ebonyi South, arguing that the senatorial contest should provide an opportunity for broader inclusion and effective representation.
On women empowerment, Nwachi pledged to facilitate access to resources for women seeking to establish or expand businesses, improve their incomes and provide for their families.
“I will make sure I provide resources for them to open businesses and be doing well, be taking care of their kids, taking care of themselves,” she said.
She also proposed organising trips for women to source goods for their businesses, alongside social activities, saying her broader objective was to help people improve their economic circumstances regardless of their background.
“I don’t care where you come from. I’m a people person. I want people to be happy. I want people to feel good,” she said, adding that she hoped to extend her efforts to improve lives beyond Ebonyi South.
Nwachi expressed confidence in her ambition, citing her community relationships and the support of well-wishers as important elements of her campaign ahead of the 2027 general election.
