The Jigawa state Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Salim Abdurrahman Lawal, Sunday, described the investment deal between the state and India’s Srinivasa Poultry Farms as the administration’s greatest achievement.
He said the signing of the $10 investment would address some of the most persistent constraints facing poultry farmers, particularly the high cost and unreliable supply of day-old chicks.
The commissioner stated this during a joint press conference with the visiting officials of the Indian farm held over the weekend in Dutse.
He added that chicks supplied to northern farmers are transported 1,200km to 1,500km from the production centres in Southern Nigeria.
He said the long journey affects the chicks’ condition and feeding response, but the proposed Jigawa hatchery will cut distances to about 150km, with delivery facilities, youth involvement and a state support scheme for farmers.
Also, while answering questions, the Srinivasa Farms Vice President, Mr. Senthil Kumar Krishnan, said the joint venture will empower rural communities and boost poultry production through technical support and quality products.
