US President Donald Trump said the technology should be referred to as “super intelligence”.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said his administration would ban the term “artificial intelligence” in official documents, calling it inaccurate. He said the technology should instead be called “super intelligence”.In a post on Truth Social, Trump questioned why The Wall Street Journal was not using his preferred term, “SI”, short for super intelligence."When will The Wall Street Journal start calling Artificial Intelligence (AI), a very bad and inaccurate name, SI (Super Intelligence), the name which virtually everyone else is using, or soon will be," Trump said."In short order, we will be officially banning the term, “AI/Artificial Intelligence,” in all relevant documents, and everything else, due to its inaccuracy."Trump's remarks came following an executive order he signed on September 30, titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence”.The order directs federal departments and agencies to replace the terms “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official communications and operations, to the extent permitted by law.The revised terminology is to be used in government correspondence, public communications, official websites, reports and administrative policy documents.
However, existing regulations, government contracts, grants and historical archival records will not be changed retroactively.Explaining the rationale, the order said advances in technology had outgrown the original framework used to describe artificial intelligence.“The capabilities of today’s frontier systems do much more than imitate or automate discrete aspects of human intelligence. They increasingly amplify human ingenuity and unlock new forms of creativity, empowering Americans to achieve what was previously impossible across science, medicine, and nearly every other domain of human endeavor,” the order stated, news agency ANI reported. The directive also gives the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology 60 days to submit proposed legislation to Congress defining “Super Intelligence” under federal law and recommending corresponding changes to existing laws. The move follows a White House meeting between Trump and leading technology executives, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai and Jensen Huang, to discuss technological advances and the safe development of advanced systems.Trump described the sector’s growth as unprecedented, while industry leaders stressed the importance of collaboration and safety. The proposed change marks a shift in the terminology the Trump administration wants federal agencies to use when referring to advanced technologies.
