Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal has won the 2026 Men’s Young Talent of the Year award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, extending his record with a third consecutive triumph.
The 19-year-old secured the honour on Monday night, having previously won the award in 2024 and 2025, becoming the first player to claim the prize three years in succession since its introduction. Blueprint reports
The award, popularly known as the Kopa Trophy, recognises the best young male footballer in the world and is presented as part of the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony organised by France Football in collaboration with UEFA.
Yamal’s latest success further strengthens his position among the outstanding young players in world football after another impressive season with Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
The winger was selected ahead of several promising young talents, including Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsí, who was also among the nominees.
Reacting to the achievement, Yamal expressed his gratitude to his teammates at club and international level, while acknowledging the quality of the other contenders.
He also indicated that he would have been happy to see Cubarsí receive the award, highlighting the Barcelona defender’s contribution and development.
Yamal extends record with historic hat-trick
Yamal first won the award in 2024 at the age of 17, becoming one of the youngest recipients in the prize’s history.
He retained it in 2025 before completing a hat-trick in 2026, establishing an unprecedented run of three consecutive victories.
The Barcelona forward’s success reflects his rapid rise from an academy prospect to one of the leading attacking players in European football.
His performances have been marked by dribbling ability, creativity, composure in one-on-one situations and an increasing influence on Barcelona’s attacking play.
At international level, he has also become an important member of Spain’s senior team, contributing to the country’s success and continuing to attract attention for his performances against elite opposition.
His third consecutive award places him ahead of previous winners who claimed the honour once or twice, further highlighting the consistency of his performances at a young age.
Barcelona continue to produce young stars
Yamal’s victory also underlines Barcelona’s continuing influence in the development of young footballers.
Cubarsí, his teammate and fellow nominee, has established himself as a defender of considerable promise, while the club’s academy has continued to provide young players with opportunities at senior level.
Yamal’s latest award comes as Barcelona seek to maintain their domestic success and remain competitive in European football.
The Kopa Trophy is decided by a jury of former Ballon d’Or winners, who assess the nominees’ performances during the relevant period.
With another victory secured, Yamal will now turn his attention to continuing his development and helping Barcelona and Spain pursue further honours.
The young forward’s third consecutive triumph adds another milestone to a career that has already delivered significant individual recognition before his 20th birthday.
