Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has been named the 2026 Men’s Coach of the Year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London after leading his country to World Cup glory this summer.
The 65-year-old received the Johan Cruyff Trophy on Monday, capping a remarkable period in charge of the Spanish national team that has also included victories at Euro 2024 and the 2023 UEFA Nations League.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final on 19 July to secure their second world title, following their maiden triumph in 2010. De la Fuente’s side completed an unbeaten campaign, conceding just once throughout the tournament.
The victory further enhanced the reputation of De la Fuente, who took charge of Spain’s senior team in December 2022 after working extensively within the country’s youth setup.
He guided Spain to European Championship success in 2024, defeating England 2-1 in the final in Berlin, before leading the team to another major international title at the World Cup.
De la Fuente prevailed over a competitive shortlist that included Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany and Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.
His latest achievement adds to Spain’s growing influence in world football, with the country producing several successful coaches across international and club competitions.
The award recognises the outstanding coach in men’s football and is named after Johan Cruyff, the Dutch football great whose influence on the modern game extended from his playing career to his work in management.
