South Coast Railway (SCoR) has stepped up safety measures and emergency preparedness across its jurisdiction in view of the likely landfall of “very severe” Cyclone Arnab expected to cross the coast close to Yanam or Kakinada of Andhra Pradesh on October 28.
SCoR General Manager Sandeep Mathur reviewed the preparedness measures at a meeting with the Divisional Railway Managers of the four divisions and Principal Heads of Departments. Mr. Mathur directed officials to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of passengers, railway personnel and train operations.
A 24-hour war room has been established at the zonal headquarters in Visakhapatnam and at the divisional headquarters to coordinate emergency response and facilitate swift action.
24x7 sureveillance
Round-the-clock surveillance has been intensified at vulnerable railway bridges, tracks, yards and signalling installations. Officials have been instructed to clear silt, vegetation and debris from catch-water drains and drainage channels to prevent waterlogging. Patrolmen and watchmen have been deployed at vulnerable locations, and adequate stocks of emergency track maintenance materials have been kept ready.
Mr. Mathur directed railway officials to maintain close coordination with State government authorities and continuously monitor weather advisories issued by the Meteorological Department.
Passenger assistance arrangements have also been strengthened. Help desks are being established at major stations to provide timely information, while additional counters will be operated to facilitate refunds if trains are cancelled.
Catering units have been instructed to maintain adequate food stocks, and alternative power supply arrangements have been made. Medical teams, first-aid facilities and ambulances are being kept ready to provide emergency assistance round the clock.
Civil Defence personnel and Scouts and Guides volunteers have been alerted. Railway crews have also been kept on standby to operate special trains, if required, while emergency response teams are ready to assist areas affected by the cyclone.
The officials said that they would disseminate information on train services and passenger arrangements through station help desks, helpline numbers and official communication channels. Passengers have been advised to follow official railway updates and cooperate with railway authorities.
