The National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) issued a prevention notice in response to the forecast from the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA) regarding high tides and winds on the Pacific coast, valid until October 31, 2026. The measure covers the Western Pacific, including the Gulf of Chiriquí; the Central Pacific, which includes the Azuero Peninsula and southern Veraguas; and the Eastern Pacific, which includes the Gulf of Panama and the Darién province. According to the IMHPA, waves between 0.6 and 1.2 meters are expected, accompanied by sustained winds of 15 to 35 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour. These conditions are compounded by waves with periods of between 13 and 18 seconds, factors that could generate rough seas and cause flooding in coastal areas.
For this reason, the authorities recommended exercising extreme caution during maritime activities, with special attention to swimmers and operators of artisanal vessels. Given this scenario, the agency urged the public to “avoid entering the sea when waves and currents pose a safety risk,” as well as to check weather conditions before setting sail and heed the instructions of security officials. He also suggested taking extra care during walks and fishing trips, not staying in coastal areas prone to flooding, and staying informed through official channels. “SINAPROC reiterates its call to the public to act responsibly and prioritize the protection of life,” the official statement emphasizes.
