A popular waterfront dining destination that was expecting thousands of customers in the lead-up to Christmas is facing cancellations and uncertainty after a ferry wharf metres from its doors was closed for two months at short notice.
The Sydney Rowing Club says the shutdown of Abbotsford Wharf threatens to undermine the riverside venue’s busiest trading period, leaving management scrambling to manage bookings, staffing and supplies arranged ahead of the festive rush.
The wharf, located about 50 metres from the venue, closed last week for essential repairs, including replacement of its gangway, and is scheduled to remain out of service until December 18.
Club general manager Peter Grosvenor said the wharf was a vital transport link for the venue, which had expected to welcome up to 35,000 customers over the festive season.
“I understand the need to maintain the wharf and public facilities but to be given just two weeks’ notice ahead of our busiest time of the year is totally inadequate,” he said.
“We asked Transport for NSW to postpone the works to an appropriate time, even after January once everyone goes back to school and work, but they didn’t want to do that.
“We’re a waterfront venue and our whole appeal is that you reach us by ferry. We’ve already had people cancel bookings because getting here is too hard.”
Transport for NSW apologised for the inconvenience, saying the closure was necessary to carry out essential repairs and replace the gangway. Passengers have been directed to alternative bus routes on Great North Road and shuttle services to Chiswick Wharf.
“Transport for NSW recognises the temporary closure of Abbotsford Wharf will affect commuters and local businesses, particularly during the busy pre-Christmas period, and appreciates the community’s patience,” a spokesperson said.
“However, work must proceed as scheduled due to the condition of the gangway and the need to maintain safe passenger access.”
Grosvenor said alternative transport options were difficult for customers, particularly given limited parking in the area.
He said the closure had also left the club uncertain about how to manage additional staff brought on to meet seasonal demand.
The shutdown has prompted frustration among residents, with concerns raised on local social media groups about disrupted ferry connections and lengthy detours.
Canada Bay councillors unanimously passed a motion last week calling on Transport for NSW to review the timing of the works and investigate whether they could be postponed until winter.
Drummoyne State Liberal MP Stephanie Di Pasqua also raised the issue in parliament, criticising the government for giving residents little warning of repairs she said had been planned for more than a year.
NSW Roads and Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison blamed the previous government for the need for repairs.
“When that wharf was replaced by the former government in 2018, it was supposed to last for another 25 years, but didn’t quite make the distance,” Aitchison said.
