New details have emerged in the Guwahati shooting case. Namita Gogoi, sister-in-law of Ghanakanta Gogoi, who lives at Lebangkula in Naharkatia, has made explosive claims, alleging that a seven-member group initially attacked Ghanakanta at Hotel Bilas Inn. Ghanakanta had reportedly settled in Guwahati around 10 to 12 years ago with his wife and daughter. He visits at the family home occasionally.
According to reports, the group brutally assaulted Ghanakanta inside the hotel, following which he opened fire to defend himself.
“Those people attacked me, and I was accused of shooting them. Everyone surrounded me, and I opened fire to protect myself. After that, I went to the police station and surrendered,” she said.
Further, Ghanakanta had taken Hotel Bilas Inn on a 10-year lease and had been running it for around a year; a dispute broke out over the money he had invested in the hotel and the demand for its return.
“He had signed an agreement to run the hotel on lease for around 10 years. He invested a lot of money in the hotel, and the family wanted the money back. Since it was not possible to return the money immediately, an argument broke out,” she said.
Namita further alleged that a group of seven people assaulted Ghanakanta inside the hotel and injured him on the head. He called her husband around 9 pm to 9:30 pm and informed him about the attack.
“He called my husband and said that he was being attacked. He told us that he had opened fire to protect himself. He has a licensed pistol,” she said.
“I do not know whether he was involved in any other cases. A group attacked him and followed his car. There was no police personnel present at the spot. He was hit on the head, and two women were also involved. They came to kill him. He warned them, but they did not listen, and he opened fire to protect himself,” she claimed.
Namita further claimed that Ghanakanta had informed his brother and family over the phone about the incident after the firing. He had also told them late at night that he was going to appear at the police station.
