First Lady Melania Trump’s lasting legacy became clear last week with the announcement of a temporary localized ceasefire in Oleshky, Ukraine – a major humanitarian development amid broader discussions the U.S. is brokering over the Russia-Ukraine War.
But what comes next is critical to ensure that aid, including safe water and medical care, can be delivered properly to the Russian-held city this week.
Exclusive Senior Advisor to First Lady Melania Trump Marc Beckman told Townhall in an interview about a follow-up meeting on Saturday in order to sort out specifics “even to the hour.”
“How do we get the civilian team from Kyiv over into Oleshky in a safe way? How do we get the media team, the American media team, from the United States, and from Europe into Oleshky in a safe way?” Beckman said, adding that the militaries of Russia and Ukraine have also been involved in the coordination. “So there are a lot of these types of details that are being worked out, drilled down now at a higher level.”
Oleshky has been subjected to horrific living conditions due to the conflict, including its mainly elderly citizens even consuming grass as food, according to Sky News.
Despite the bloody ongoing war, Beckman noted that all three parties involved “worked very, very diligently and with great cooperation.”
“This is the first tangible moment towards peace in a region that has been in this bitter war,” he said, later adding that it "could definitely become the historical impetus behind the establishment of everlasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
“What the First Lady has done here is put together a situation that can lead to broader, long-standing peace,” Beckman said.

She was initially informed about the humanitarian crisis during a Fostering the Future Together event she hosted last month at the United Nations General Assembly, according to a press release.
The advisor noted that Trump utilized her relationships from her child reunification efforts to make it happen, saying she first approached the Ukrainian government, which he said “enthusiastically agreed” to it, which led to a “formal document" that made her the “exclusive intermediary with Russia regarding the Oleshky matter.”
“And then, in turn, the First Lady communicated with the Russian side,” Beckman noted.
“They were very excited about the prospect of working with the First Lady on this. Both sides were very cooperative and very enthusiastic,” he continued.
“I have to tell you that [Friday] during the signing, one of the most exciting and heartening moments of my life was seeing the Russian and Ukrainians' face when they signed this,” he said.
The Office of the First Lady noted in its initial announcement last week that “demining” will play a key role in preparing for the ceasefire, as there is a “Road of Death” riddled with landmines on the route Oleshky residents would likely need to go through to leave the area, the Atlantic Council reported earlier this month.
Both the Kremlin and Ukrainian officials confirmed the First Lady-brokered ceasefire plan, including Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, who posted that the “operation is extremely complex and will be carried out in stages.”

“There's no clean water, there's no access to food. Electricity is really in a bad situation. There are mines all over the city and around the city. So, the First Lady organized for humanitarian aid to enter Oleshky beginning on the 29th, which will include food, medicine, doctors,” Beckman said, noting that the Russian military also plans to hold a ceasefire in the wider Kherson area starting on Tuesday.
“It's a dire situation there. People are dying. The First Lady really is helping people that need tons of assistance,” Beckman said.
