A driver in Maidan Wardak province tells Amu TV that deteriorating roads in Nirkh district can turn the transport of patients to health facilities into a three-hour journey, as residents call for major repairs to routes connecting villages with the provincial center.
Two other residents of the district told Amu TV that roads in Nirkh are in poor condition and need extensive reconstruction. The two who are drivers and regularly travel between Nirkh and Maidan Shahr, said damaged roads have caused repeated vehicle breakdowns and delays in getting patients to health facilities.
“The problems are so serious that a few days ago I was transporting a patient who had undergone surgery,” Mohammadullah said. “It took me three hours to get the patient from the provincial center to Maktab Bazaar.”
Another driver, Mohammad Wasil, said roads linking several villages to the main route have been damaged by flooding. He said a small bridge used by residents is also no longer passable.
“I was transporting patients from the village,” Wasil said. “Water had flooded this section, and I could not get to the other side of the bridge. A Mazda truck came and helped get me across, but then my vehicle’s engine stopped working. I faced a lot of difficulty.”
Residents are calling for roads in the province to be rebuilt to proper engineering standards.
“Our roads are in very poor condition,” said Gul Rahman, a Wardak resident. “We ask the authorities to rebuild them properly and according to engineering standards so that people can benefit. We do not want work to be done if the roads are not built properly.”
Residents of Nirkh say the problem extends beyond individual roads in the district, with routes leading to many districts in Wardak also damaged and in need of reconstruction.
