People took to the streets in cities across Serbia to hail the victory of the opposition Student List, ending the rule of strongman leader Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party, which had been in power for 14 years.
Supporters of the opposition Student List began celebrating soon after the polls closed on Sunday night, thronging city centres across Serbia in an emotional response to their defeat of the Serbian Progressive Party’s “United Serbia” electoral slate and its leader Aleksandar Vucic.
After his long political dominance of Serbia was ended by a surge of opposition support at the parliamentary election, Vucic acknowledged around 9.30 p.m. that “it is clear that we have lost this election”.
According to the latest figures from the Republic Electoral Commission, Student List won 52.6 per cent of the vote and “United Serbia” 39.2 per cent.
