Women in Leadership International (WILI) has called for a thorough, independent investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
The organisation also wants immediate protection and support for affected students, amid reports that some complaints may not have received timely attention.
In a statement, WILI expressed concern about the alleged abuse and questions surrounding how the complaints were handled.
“Schools must be places of learning, safety and opportunity, not environments where children fear exploitation, intimidation or abuse by those entrusted with their care,” it said.
WILI acknowledged steps taken by the Ghana Education Service and other relevant authorities to investigate. However, it said the seriousness of the allegations required an impartial and transparent process.
The investigation, it said, must establish the facts, examine possible institutional failures and ensure accountability wherever wrongdoing is established.
The organisation also raised concerns about reports that some affected students and families may have faced pressure or intimidation.
“No girl should be afraid to report abuse. No parent should fear consequences for seeking justice for their child. And no position of authority should place anyone beyond scrutiny,” the statement said.
WILI urged investigators to examine all credible allegations, including any failures to report, prevent or respond appropriately to suspected abuse.
It called for confidential counselling, protection from intimidation and access to appropriate medical and legal assistance for affected students.
The organisation stressed that the investigation and any related disruptions must not undermine the girls’ education or future opportunities.
It also urged authorities to strengthen safeguarding systems in schools through accessible reporting channels, clear professional boundaries, mandatory reporting procedures and effective accountability mechanisms.
WILI requested regular public updates on the investigation, while protecting the privacy, dignity and safety of students and preserving the integrity of the process.
The organisation acknowledged the right of every accused person to due process and the presumption of innocence. It said these principles must coexist with the duty to protect children and investigate complaints promptly.
It appealed to government institutions, school authorities, parents, civil society organisations and communities to work together to make schools safer for girls.
“A girl’s education should open doors to her future, not expose her to harm,” the statement said.
“Protecting our girls is not optional. It is a collective responsibility.”
