Now brace for Storm Chloe! More wild weather could be on its way just hours after Storm Boelo left two dead and more than 160,000 without power

Britons have been warned to brace for more rain on Monday after Storm Boelo battered the nation.

Winds of up to 85mph and heavy downpours wreaked havoc over the weekend, with travel disrupted and an estimated 160,000 homes across the country left without power.

But unfortunately the extreme conditions are not set to subside just yet, with the third storm of the season potentially on the horizon.

The Met Office predicts that rain will once again 'sweep across the north-east' of Britain on Monday, while Tuesday will remain 'windy with rain'.

A forecast for Monday reads: 'On Monday rain will sweep northeast across the UK, with strengthening winds bringing gales in the west later. After a cold start for some, it will feel increasingly mild in the west.'

Storm Chloe is the next available name on the 2026-27 storm list and, should the weather intensify enough to trigger an amber or red warning, the Met Office will officially declare that the third storm of the season has hit.

The forecaster's amber warning which signalled Storm Boelo came to an end at 9pm on Sunday evening.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: 'It's a very similar situation to Boelo on Monday and Tuesday.

'In other words, the strongest winds expected to affect northern parts of the UK and expected to arrive on Tuesday.

'Risks of 70mph wind gusts, yellow warning in force, but of course we'll be watching this one very closely.'

Only days after the first storm of the autumn hit the UK, Storm Boelo caused chaos over the weekend.

Gusts of 60-70mph battered northern parts of Britain early on Sunday with the most extreme conditions recorded in coastal areas. In Machrihanish, a small village on Scotland's west coast, wind speeds as quick as 85mph were recorded.

A 60-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a tree blown over in gale-force winds in Dumfries before, only hours later, it was confirmed that a man in his 20s had also died on the same day after his car was crushed by a falling tree in Mill Hill, north London.

Footage from Dalmarnock, County Durham, showed a stream of water flooding through the town early this morning, forcing dozens of shops into closure. Meanwhile the town of Largs, in Ayrshire, was left submerged following flooding overnight.

A store owner in the Scottish town was brought to tears after her property was ruined by the rain, forcing her to throw away her stock.

Toni Dawson, who runs Geraldo's ice cream and gift shop, told Sky News: 'Literally within half-an-hour hour the water is coming up so fast and the main street is flooded.

'We're trying to clear out as much of the debris as we can and board up the front of the shop and put some sandbags there.'

The Met Office said the succession of weather systems hitting the UK is being driven by the jet stream which is currently 'particularly active'.

Statistics released tonight by the Energy Networks Association (ENA) revealed that some 161,400 homes across the country have been left without power, while more than 800,000 have suffered power cuts since Storm Austen hit.

The ENA said: 'The networks have been focussed on reconnecting customers this morning, though the continuing severe weather in some regions is limiting network engineers' opportunities to safely start the work of restoring customers' power today and access to certain areas remains difficult.'

Earlier, Northern Powergrid warned customers to 'err on the side of caution and consider seeking alternative accommodation' due to the risk of power outages.

In Aberfeldy, Northern Ireland, two women were injured and rushed to hospital after being hit by a fallen tree.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away from the eye of Storm Boelo, two people were taken to hospital in Streatham, south London, yesterday after a large section of scaffolding was brought down by strong winds.
