Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha will inaugurate the much-awaited Agartala Tea Auction Centre at Pandit Nehru Complex in Agartala on Thursday. Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma will also be present at the inaugural programme.
Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC), Samir Ranjan Ghosh, announced the details at a press conference held today at his office chamber.
Ghosh said the demand for establishing a dedicated tea auction centre in Tripura has been pending for a long time. The launch of the new facility is expected to benefit both tea producers and buyers, while enabling tea growers to secure better prices for their produce.
With the opening of the Agartala Tea Auction Centre, Tripura will join the list of states having dedicated tea auction facilities. At present, tea auction centres are operational in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
He said, the new centre is expected to create a more organised market for Tripura tea, facilitate easier access to buyers and provide small tea growers with better opportunities to sell their produce. It is also expected to reduce transportation and other logistical costs, save time and improve the overall marketing system for tea produced in the state.
According to the TTDC Chairman, the new system is expected to reduce the time required for the overall auction process by around 40 per cent. The initiative is likely to give further impetus to Tripura’s tea industry and contribute to strengthening the state’s economy.
TTDC Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Das said that e-auctions will be conducted every Monday at the new centre. So far, eight buyers, nine sellers and three brokers/intermediaries have registered with the auction centre.
