There are great hockey broadcasters. There are legendary hockey broadcasters. And then there is Tripp Tracy, a man who can turn a routine Tuesday night against Columbus into a religious experience for 20,000 Caniacs.
Is he the greatest color commentator in hockey?
Objectively, that debate is impossible to settle. Subjectively, if you bleed Carolina Hurricanes red, black and white, there is only one acceptable answer.
WOOOOOO!
Tripp Tracy is the GOAT.
The man has spent nearly three decades calling Hurricanes hockey. He has survived losing seasons, playoff heartbreak, conference final disappointments and the glorious return of the Stanley Cup to Raleigh.
He has given us catchphrases, legendary stories, outrageous enthusiasm and the kind of personality that makes watching a hockey game feel like hanging out with your most entertaining friend.
And now, with the Hurricanes Hockey Network officially launching for the 2026-27 season, Tripp is right where he belongs.
On the air. In the booth. Digging in.
Tripp Tracy Is Not Just a Color Commentator. He Is a Caniac Institution.
Tracy joined the Hurricanes’ broadcast team for the 1998-99 season. The franchise had recently relocated from Hartford, and hockey in North Carolina was still establishing its identity.
Nearly three decades later, Tracy is one of the most recognizable voices in the entire organization.
Think about that for a second.
Players have come and gone. Coaches have come and gone. General managers have come and gone. Uniforms have changed, arenas have changed, and the franchise has gone from a struggling newcomer to a Stanley Cup champion.
Tripp has been there for almost all of it.
He remembers the history. He knows the personalities. He can explain the tactical details of a game while somehow taking a detour into a story that sounds like it belongs in a Raleigh barbecue joint at 1 a.m.
And somehow, it works.
That is the magic of Tracy. He brings genuine hockey knowledge without sounding like he is reading a coaching manual. He has opinions without turning every broadcast into a lecture. He is enthusiastic without making every moment feel manufactured.
Most importantly, he sounds like somebody who actually loves being there.
That matters.
A color commentator should help viewers understand the game. The best ones also make viewers want to spend three hours watching it.
Tripp does both.
The Greatest Color Guy in Hockey? Make Your Case, Canada.
Hockey has some tremendous broadcasters.
There are national voices with decades of experience, analysts with championship résumés and commentators who can break down a defensive-zone rotation with surgical precision.
They deserve their flowers.
But how many can match Tracy’s combination of personality, history, genuine fandom and sheer entertainment value?
Tripp can spend one shift explaining why a defenseman needs to make a better first pass. Then he can spend the next minute telling a story that somehow connects a former Hurricane, a memorable road trip and the cultural fabric of the Triangle.
He makes the broadcast feel local without making it feel small.
That is a difficult balance.
National broadcasts can sometimes treat regional hockey cultures as background noise. Tracy makes Carolina’s hockey culture the main event.
He knows the fans. He understands the franchise’s history. He recognizes that a game is not merely a collection of shots, saves and expected-goals percentages.
It is an experience.
The anticipation before puck drop. The anxiety of a one-goal lead. The collective explosion when Sebastian Aho finds the back of the net. The familiar chants and the postgame debates that continue long after the final horn.
Tripp is part of all of it.
And if you think that does not count toward being a great broadcaster, you might be watching hockey for the wrong reasons.
Welcome to HHN: Hurricanes Hockey Network, Baby!
The 2026-27 season brings a new chapter for the Hurricanes’ television operation.
The organization launched Hurricanes Hockey Network, or HHN, as its new local broadcast home. Mike Maniscalco remains the play-by-play announcer, Tracy returns as television analyst, Hanna Yates joins the organization as broadcast and digital host, and Shane Willis continues his work as an analyst.
The network carries 72 of Carolina’s 84 regular-season games in its local territory, alongside pregame, intermission and postgame programming.
For Caniacs, the most important part is simple: the familiar voices remain.
And that includes Tripp.
The name might be new. The distribution might be different. Fans might still be figuring out where to find the broadcasts.
But the mission remains the same: bring Hurricanes hockey into homes across the Carolinas and make every game feel like an event.
Some fans have referred to the team’s local broadcast operation as Canes Vision, while others remember the previous regional sports network era. Whatever nickname you use, the essential ingredient remains the same.
Give us the Canes. Give us Mike Maniscalco. Give us Tripp Tracy.
And please, for the love of everything holy in Raleigh, give us another championship run.
The Stanley Cup Run Gave Tripp His Defining Moment
Tracy’s connection to Carolina became even more powerful during the Hurricanes’ 2026 Stanley Cup run.
After years of playoff heartbreak, Carolina finally broke through and captured the championship. The franchise’s second Stanley Cup arrived two decades after its first, creating a new generation of memories for players, fans and broadcasters.
Tracy was there to call it.
His enthusiasm was not something manufactured for a highlight package. It came from decades of living through the same highs and lows as the fan base.
He had watched the organization grow. He had watched teams come up short. He had watched the fan base remain loyal through the hard years.
Then the Hurricanes finally finished the job.
That is why a great broadcast call matters. The voice becomes attached to the memory.
Years from now, Caniacs will remember where they watched the decisive game, who they watched it with and what the broadcast sounded like when Carolina secured the Cup.
For many of them, Tracy’s voice will be part of that memory forever.
That is a legacy no analytics model can measure.
Tripp Is the Huge Caniac’s Huge Caniac
There is a reason Tracy’s personality has become part of Hurricanes culture.
He embraces the weirdness. He embraces the history. He embraces the fans who make the franchise what it is.
His famous enthusiasm for Huge Caniacs has become a recurring part of the team’s identity. His podcast, Digging in with Tripp, extends that personality beyond the broadcast booth.
He also has a life beyond hockey, including charitable work in the Raleigh community. The Hurricanes’ official biography highlights his involvement with organizations supporting children and cancer-related causes.
That community connection matters in a market where the sport has grown alongside the franchise.
Carolina hockey is not simply an NHL product. It is part of the Triangle’s sports culture, sharing space with college basketball, football and the everyday rhythms of life in North Carolina.
Tracy has helped make the Hurricanes feel like a local institution.
He is not merely explaining what happens on the ice. He is helping tell the story of the people who care about it.
And that is why fans who grew up watching the Canes can turn on a broadcast years later and still feel at home.
So, Is Tripp Tracy the GOAT?
We will leave the formal rankings to the internet’s most serious hockey philosophers.
But here is the argument for Tracy.
He has longevity. He has hockey knowledge. He has a recognizable voice and a personality that cannot be replicated. He has a genuine connection with the team and the community. And he has been part of the Hurricanes’ story through almost every meaningful chapter of their North Carolina existence.
That is an impressive résumé.
Maybe another commentator has a stronger national reputation. Maybe another analyst offers more technical detail. Maybe you prefer a different style.
Fine. Hockey is better when people have their favorites.
But if your standard for greatness includes making a fan base feel connected to its team, turning games into shared experiences and giving a franchise a voice that feels uniquely its own, Tracy belongs in the conversation.
For Hurricanes fans, he might already have won it.
So crank up HHN. Get comfortable. Put the game on. And prepare for another evening of hockey, stories, analysis and whatever wonderfully unpredictable tangent Tripp has waiting.
The Canes are back. The Death Star is operational. The Cup is in Carolina.
And Tripp Tracy is still in the booth.
WOOOOOO! LONG LIVE TRIPP TRACY. LONG LIVE HHN. LONG LIVE THE CANES.
