Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. both left the Utah Jazz's game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday early after suffering injuries in the first half.
With the Jazz holding a 13-11 lead midway through the first quarter, Markkanen tried to run his defender, Grizzlies rookie Cam Boozer, off a flare screen from Jackson. Not wanting to get left behind the play, Boozer worked to stay connected to Markkanen through the contact. In the process, Markkanen's right hand got caught between Boozer's arm and Jackson's body, appearing to bend it backward in a fashion that left the 29-year-old Finnish forward in evident pain:

Boozer was whistled for a foul on the play. Markkanen promptly subbed out, favoring his right wrist. Shortly thereafter, the Jazz designated him as questionable to return; about five minutes later, they ruled him out entirely, bringing a premature end to the All-Star forward's night. Markkanen finished with two points in just six minutes of floor time.
Not long after Markkanen went to the locker room, Jackson also wound up on the wrong end of a collision when Grizzlies guard Ty Jerome drove to the lane, drew a foul on Jazz defender Svi Mykhailiuk, and fell into the right leg of the stationary Jackson as he stood in the restricted area:

Jackson hit the ground in a lot of pain, and soon joined Markkanen in the locker room, where he too was ruled out for the remainder of the contest. He finished with six points, three rebounds and two assists in 10 minutes, leaving Utah — which is already missing injured center Jusuf Nurkić — without its entire would-be starting frontcourt for the balance of the game. (Nurkić's backup, Jaxson Hayes, also missed the game with right shoulder soreness.)
Despite losing two of their three leading scorers on the season, the Jazz persevered. Keyonte George (26 points, six assets), Ace Bailey (17 points, 10 rebounds) and third-string center Mo Bamba (14 points, seven rebounds, four blocks) led a charge that saw Utah whittle what had been a 16-point deficit down to one point with one minute to go in regulation.
The Jazz would never get all the way over the hump, though. Jerome — who entered Monday as the NBA's leading scorer and was just named the Western Conference Player of the Week — scored six of his 15 points in the closing minutes, helping the Grizzlies keep Utah at bay and finish off a 110-105 win to improve to a surprising 4-0 on the young season.
Both Markkanen and Jackson will undergo MRI testing on Tuesday to determine the severity of their injuries, Jazz head coach Will Hardy said after the game.
"We'll know more tomorrow once they get some imaging," Hardy told reporters.
After falling to 1-3 with the loss, the Jazz will hope for positive news on their two All-Star forwards, who, due to myriad injuries, have barely logged 100 minutes together since Jackson's arrival from Memphis at the February 2026 trade deadline.
