While the 2026 WNBA Finals are tied 2-2, nothing is ever evenly balanced.
A pivotal Game 5 awaits. The team that wins two games will be crowned champion.
The question is: Which team has the edge right now?
Is it the Golden State Valkyries after regaining homecourt advantage with their Game 4 win? Or is it the Atlanta Dream, as they have consistently outplayed their opponent up to this point?
Let’s take a deeper look at determine which team is in a better position in what has become a best-of-three series. And in the comments, let us know if you agree, in addition to sharing your analysis.
Why the Valkyries are in control
Golden State is right where they want to be.
To lose this series, they must be beaten at home. They’ve made Chase Center their palace, and they’ve played some great basketball while winning a ton of games there. So, sure, the Dream have played well, even better than the Valkyries, but this late into an evenly matched series, any edge a team can get is huge.
The fact that Game 5 will be at Golden State and a winner-take-all, if necessary, Game 7 will be as well, is a huge advantage.
Also, the Valkyries have to feel they’ve figured some things out after winning Game 4. They followed through on all the keys to the game. Gabby Williams was sensational. She had 17 points in the win. Angel Reese was neutralized. With Kiah Stokes on the floor, Reese struggled. She had her worst game of the Finals, scoring just eight points on 2-for-12 shooting.
The Valkyries also took care of the basketball, outrebounded Atlanta and scored more inside the paint. Replicating this dominance is unlikely, but it showed what they can do when everything clicks.
With home court and a recipe for success, they have to like their chances.
Why the Dream are in control
As the underdogs, the Dream have done their job. They’ve split games with the Valkyries and understand that they are just one win away from playing Game 6 at home (wherever that home might be) and having a chance at winning their first title.
Yes, Golden State is a hostile environment. But the Dream played there in Games 1 and 2, and if they hadn’t blown a lead in the fourth quarter of Game 1, they would’ve won both games.
The Dream know their game plan. They have to keep Reese involved and, as she said on the court, pass her the ball. That’s the key to success, and if they do that in Game 5, they should walk away on top.
Atlanta just has more offense than Golden State. The Dream have four players—Reese, Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard and Jordin Canada—averaging 10-plus points in this series. The Valkyries only have two.
While the win total is even, the Dream have outscored the Valkyries in nine of the 16 quarters played. They’ve been better. If they can keep that up in the next two or even three games, they’ll come out on top.
What’s the verdict?
This one is close, but the Valkyries have the advantage.
They are the home team, and with not much separating these two, that gives them the best chance to win the title.
Advantages are nice, but they mean nothing without execution.
At this juncture, there aren’t many adjustments left to make. Each team knows what it does well and what it wants to take away from their opponent. Whoever achieves their objectives more often in these matchups will win it all.
