Big picture: India back to winning ways
It could well be down to the high variance in a short format, but India's 2026 in T20Is is a good argument for the format against allegations of monotony.
India started the year like a hurtling train, becoming the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title with a sum total of one match lost in two editions. Then they lost 2-0 in Ireland in bouncier, windier conditions. Then they lost the series in England. Even back home without Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, they didn't look invincible against West Indies, the series ending 2-2.

In New Zealand, bouncy and windy New Zealand, still missing Bumrah and Hardik, with only one training session before the first game, India have won two matches out of two against the World Cup runners-up. They have now won nine of their last ten matches against New Zealand even though the last Test and ODI series between the sides went to New Zealand.
Christchurch to Wellington's Cake Tin (Hnry Stadium) suggests greater windiness but shorter square boundaries at around 60m. India have managed to get into the lead with better execution of bowling plans and generous gifts in the field by New Zealand. The plans will need to be altered keeping the new dimensions in mind.
New Zealand will also have to make do without Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson, neither of whom finished their allotment on Saturday night. Having lost their last two home series against India, New Zealand will hope to not make it three so early in the series. The must-win times are upon New Zealand with India feeling quite at home so far.

In the spotlight: NZ's spinners and India's middle order
Between them, in two matches, the tall New Zealand spinners, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, have bowled 16 overs for 132 runs and eight wickets. India are playing only one specialist spinner, Axar Patel, and he has gone at just under ten an over.
Part of it is down to the height and guile of the spinners, but part of it is also down to certain reluctance to take risks against spin. Tilak Varma, for example, has gone at a strike rate of 76 against spin and 220 against pace. Sanju Samson and Naman Dhir are the only ones that have taken spin apart. There might be a case for more proactivity because you don't want a repeat of Tilak Varma going at under a-run-a-ball for 15 and then relying on the less likely but sensational acceleration against pace.
Team news: Sooryavanshi gets another chance
Matt Henry bowled only two overs in the last match, one of them a maiden, and has now been taken out of the series with the two other formats in mind. Lockie Ferguson is out for only one match. They still have Adam Milne and Blair Tickner for the rest of the series, and Kyle Jamieson for this match before he plays a Ford Trophy game.
There might be temptation to bring in one left-hand batter in the top five, but Bevon Jacobs has looked in decent touch.
New Zealand (probable): 1 Finn Allen, 2 Tim Seifert (wk), 3 Bevon Jacobs/Devon Conway, 4 Glenn Phillips, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Michael Bracewell, 7 Mitchell Santner (capt), 8 Nathan Smith, 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Adam Milne, 11 Jacob Duffy.
India have stuck to their guns of not compromising the batting ability of the top five for whatever extra bowling a replacement might be able to bring. There might have been case to replace Dhir, whose second skill is spin, with a seam-bowling allrounder, but India basically said his batting was more important than Shivam Dube's bowling. In the absence of a full-time bowler who can hit from No. 8, they have stuck with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has actually bowled two decent 19th overs. Expect them to stick with that combination.
Ishan Kishan has not yet fully recovered so that will give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi another go at No. 3.
India (probable): 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Sanju Samson (wk), 3 Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 4 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Naman Dhir, 7 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 8 Axar Patel, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Prince Yadav, 11 Arshdeep Singh.
Pitch and conditions
The last T201 in Wellington was a comfortable and successful defence of 164, but there has also been one successful chase of 216 at the same venue. You would expect life in a fresh pitch. There could still be a low score, but likely not on account of a slow pitch.
It has been highly windy in the lead-up to the match, there is some rain around as well, but the actual match hours are predicted to be much more settled with no rain and only moderately strong winds.
Stats and trivia
- Tilak Varma has now stayed unbeaten in 26 T20 chases and his team has won each of them
- Arshdeep Singh has 38 wickets in 2026, only one behind Josh Little's record for most wickets in a year for a Full-Member player
