Sarwar Farid is attending a four-day multilateral conference on counter-terrorism
Bangladesh National Security Intelligence (NSI) Director General Major General Abu Mohammad Sarwar Farid went to New Delhi yesterday to attend the 8th South Asian Counter Terrorism Conference, a multilateral forum involving representatives from several countries.
He went to Delhi on an Air India flight, an NSI source told The Daily Star.
The four-day conference, scheduled for October 25-28, brings together representatives from South Asian, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries.
The NSI chief is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on October 28, the source said.
The source emphasised that the visit was for a multilateral conference, rejecting attempts to portray it as a “bilateral engagement” between Bangladesh and India.
“The forum is a multilateral one, not bilateral,” the source said, alleging that some Indian outlets were attempting to create a misleading narrative surrounding the visit.
The annual conference brings together representatives from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Oman.
It aims to strengthen regional cooperation on counter-terrorism, drug trafficking and human trafficking, while promoting broader diplomatic engagement among participating countries.
