SoFi Technologies reported $161.6 million in gross crypto transaction revenue for the third quarter. After costs, it kept $1.6 million.
That gap is the whole story. The headline number looks like a crypto business rivaling a mid-sized exchange. The net number looks like a rounding error on a fintech that just posted a $241 million profit.
The numbers behind the number
SoFi (NASDAQ: SOFI) released its Q3 results on October 27, 2026, covering the quarter that ended September 30, 2026.
Crypto transactions generated $161.6 million on a gross basis. Associated costs came to $160.0 million. What was left over, $1.6 million, is the net crypto transaction revenue SoFi actually keeps.
The reason the gross figure balloons has to do with how SoFi structures the trades. The company acts as a principal when members buy or sell digital assets, and it routes those orders through third-party liquidity providers.
Applied to SoFi, the $161.6 million largely reflects the value of crypto changing hands through its app, not the fees SoFi pockets. The $1.6 million is closer to the true economic take.
That ratio has been steady. Across the first three quarters of 2026, SoFi’s net crypto revenue has hovered around 1% of gross volumes, according to the company’s reported figures.
Crypto is growing, just not as a profit engine
SoFi Crypto products reached 503,070 by the end of Q3, up from 388,336 at the close of Q2.
For context, SoFi’s total financial services products stood at 23.2 million. So crypto remains a small slice of the overall product count, though it is clearly one of the faster-moving slices.
The broader quarter was strong. SoFi produced adjusted net revenue of $1.4 billion, up 44% year-over-year, alongside net income of $241 million.
Management also raised its full-year 2026 guidance, pointing to broad member acquisition and product growth as the drivers. Crypto was not singled out as the reason for the beat, which tracks given its net contribution.
SoFi’s earnings release did not name any specific tokens or protocols tied to the platform’s activity.
A return trip to digital assets
SoFi Crypto launched in Q4 2025. It marked the company’s return to digital asset services after it had previously exited the space.
The relaunched platform lets members buy, sell and hold digital assets directly inside the SoFi app. That puts crypto alongside the company’s lending, banking and investing products rather than in a separate silo.
What this means for SoFi and its shareholders
For investors reading the earnings release, the key move is to look past the $161.6 million. Treating gross crypto transaction revenue as comparable to SoFi’s lending or deposit income would badly overstate crypto’s contribution to the bottom line.
The $1.6 million net figure is the one that matters for profitability. Against $1.4 billion in adjusted net revenue, crypto’s net contribution is marginal.
There’s also a disclosure lesson here. Principal-based accounting can make a crypto offering look far larger on the top line than its economics justify. Investors comparing SoFi with other fintechs or brokerages should check whether peers book crypto on a gross or net basis before drawing conclusions from revenue figures.
What to watch in coming quarters is fairly specific. First, whether the net-to-gross ratio budges from the roughly 1% level it has held through 2026. Second, whether the growth in crypto products keeps pace. The jump from 388,336 to 503,070 in a single quarter is notable. Third, whether SoFi adds new offerings to the crypto platform. The earnings release didn’t reference specific digital assets or protocols, so any expansion in what members can access would be a signal of how seriously the company intends to build out the business.
