The Róng Museum of Art (RMoA) in Shenzhen, China, announced the appointment of Freya Chou, Li Jia, and Susanna Zhu to its curatorial team. Set to open in the latter half of 2027, the museum named Pi Li as founding director in March. Chou and Jia will jointly oversee the museum’s exhibitions, research, and public programs, and Zhu will lead learning and public-engagement programming.
“As a new cultural institution rooted in Shenzhen and connected to the world, RMoA is committed to presenting twenty-first-century artistic and creative practices through a global lens, while fostering cross-cultural dialogue and knowledge exchange through exhibitions, research, and public programs,” Li said in a statement. “Freya Chou, Li Jia, and Susanna Zhu each bring substantial expertise and distinct perspectives spanning contemporary art research, international curatorial practice, and community-centered public engagement.”
Chou explores intercultural exchange across visual art, performance, and literature. She served as Para Site’s inaugural curator of education and public programs from 2015 to 2019 and has organized exhibitions at SculptureCenter in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. She also cocurated the 13th Taipei Biennial and curated Hong Kong’s pavilion at the 2002 Venice Biennale.
Jia focuses on the reinterpretation of Chinese contemporary art histories in her curatorial work. She held the positions of deputy director of Pace Beijing from 2012 to 2015 and senior curator at Taikang Space from 2015 to 2020, where she organized such shows as Yang Guangnan’s “Light Pavilion Project,” and “Genders Engender.” As curator-in-residence at Asymmetry Art Foundation in 2024, she curated “Build Where You Stand: Symposium on Community Art Practices in Contemporary China.”
Zhu brings more than two decades of experience with museum learning, public engagement, and community-based cultural practice in cultural institutions, including as deputy director of the Exhibition Department at Shenzhen Fine Art Institute (2003–2014), secretary general of the Shenzhen Curiosity Museum Studies Centre (2017–2026), and director of the Zishi ESG Garden Community Museum of Sustainability (2024–2026).
