On the latest episode of The Real Forno Show, Tyler Forness dove deep into the Vikings’ All-22 film against the Colts and delivered a blunt assessment: “This offense was very weird on Sunday, and I mean that from every possible angle. It was both good, it was both bad, and it was also ugly.” The frustration, Forness argues, is amplified by J.J. McCarthy’s success in New York — “the guy was selected 10th overall to be our starting quarterback and he’s not, and the Vikings got rid of him for a fifth and any time he shows any semblance of success, it’s gonna hurt a little bit more.”
But the real story is the run game. Forness didn’t mince words: “Vikings’ run game sucks. It’s bad.” He praised Aaron Jones as “an absolute warrior” who “doesn’t have the juice anymore,” and called Jordan Mason “a good 1B, but he’s not a 1A.” The proposed fix? A trade for a home-run threat like Jonathan Taylor — “somebody who can get big chunks, somebody who can be a home run threat, is going to be the simplest way to fix a lot of these offensive issues.” Dave Stefano agreed: “If Taylor can give us a Christian McCaffrey type boost, that would be beneficial.”
Meanwhile, Kyler Murray drew a provocative comparison. Forness said: “My biggest hot take with this Vikings team is right now it is being quarterbacked by 2020 Kirk Cousins.” He placed Murray in “purgatory range where he does just enough good stuff to keep you excited and just enough bad stuff where it’s like, ‘I’m going to beat you with a hammer.'” Yet the data shows a path forward — Murray was dead average in EPA per play (.156) and success rate (45.5%), suggesting regression to the mean could help.
The defense, however, is otherworldly. “This is trending to be a historic defense,” Forness said. Stefano’s response: “Legendary is the proper term.” Forness went further: “You can win a Super Bowl with this defense paired with this offense.” They’ve allowed just three points in the fourth quarter over six games, and upcoming tests against the Lions, 49ers, and Bills will prove whether that dominance is sustainable.
Key Points:
- Run game is the #1 problem: The Vikings rank 26th in EPA per rush and 26th in success rate (34%). Forness’s blame pie chart: 50% run game, 30% Kyler Murray, 10% Kevin O’Connell, 10% pass blocking.
- Trade deadline target: Jonathan Taylor is the ideal acquisition — a package similar to the Christian McCaffrey deal (2nd, 3rd, 4th/5th) makes sense. Saquon Barkley is a longer shot.
- Offensive line reality: Will Fries “is getting cut” per Forness. Blake Brandel hasn’t taken the expected step forward. Joe Huber has been a nice surprise but is still a backup. Brian O’Neill and Christian Darrisaw remain solid but have occasional breakdowns.
- O’Connell’s “can” system exposed: O’Connell admitted his two-play call system lets defenses dictate outcomes: “We can’t put it so much in the defense’s hands on ultimately what play we end up running.” Forness wants more aggressiveness — “We’re gonna run this, and we’re just gonna jam it down your throat.”
- Kyler Murray = 2020 Kirk Cousins: flashes of brilliance (deep outs to Justin Jefferson, seam routes to T.J. Hockenson) mixed with uncharacteristic accuracy issues and conservative decision-making.
- Historic defense: Six games, three fourth-quarter points allowed. Forness believes a Super Bowl is within reach if the offense improves even marginally.
- 2027 NFL Draft devaluation: With NIL and extended eligibility weakening rounds 3-7, trading mid-to-late picks for impact players hurts less this year than in most.
- Kevin O’Connell is safe: At 49-25 with an 11-game win streak, Forness shut down hot-seat talk: “The Wilfs aren’t firing him.” If anyone goes, it’d be Josh McCown or Wes Phillips.

So here’s the question:
Will Nolan Teasley swing big at the deadline, or will Vikings fans be left watching another team land the difference-maker?
